Over 800 Filipinos of the 7,000 new U.S. citizens received a warm welcome as the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services conducted recently a day-long series of naturalization ceremonies in Los Angeles.
As shared in an article written by Steve Angeles on ABS-CBN News, Filipinos are the second largest group of the day behind Mexico.
The report said many Filipinos were eager to start their life as full-pledged Americans with all the corresponding benefits that come as citizens of USA.
“I love to be an American because when I came here all my dreams were fulfilled to help my poor relatives,” Leonela Po, a new U.S. citizen, was quoted saying.
Meanwhile, another new US citizen who was identified as Reynaldo Galant said: “You know, Filipinos yearn to become American citizens. There’s a lot of benefits to receive, especially if you live here.”
As such, the naturalization of some 7,000 new citizens would mean there are 7,000 new potential voters, many of whom immediately registered to vote in this year’s U.S. presidential election after they were sworn in as they expressed full obedience to the American law.
Despite the fulfillment of their longtime dream, some of these new Americans plan on taking back their Philippine citizenship. This, they said, will be done by applying for dual citizenship for their Philippine properties and future retirement benefits.
