Duterte’s son, Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo “Pulong” Duterte, has chosen to support the vice presidential candidacy of Senator Chiz Escudero over his father’s running mate, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano. Pulong Duterte announced his support for Escudero on Thursday, March 31, during their meeting in Davao City. Karina V. Canedo wrote in her article for Sun Star that was published on April 1, 2016 that according to Mayor Duterte’s spokesman Peter Tiu Laviña, the mayor has made no comment on the matter yet. “We are still waiting for the Mayor’s own words about the matter,” Laviña told Sun Star. Mayor Duterte, in previous campaign sorties, pleaded for Davaoeños to support Senator Cayetano for vice president. He even said that if Davaoeños will not vote for Cayetano, it is better not to vote for him as president as well. The younger Duterte said Escudero’s significant help to Davao City are enough reasons for him to choose the senator from the Bicol region as his vice president. Vice Mayor Duterte said Senator Escudero helped the city through his infrastructure projects and scholarship programs and by contributing to the Lingap Para Sa Mahirap and the Davao House of Hope. He said that since he is not affiliated with any national political party, he is not bound by any group as far his preference for a national candidate is concerned. “At the moment, I belong to a local party and while I may not toe the line of the party’s preference in the national arena, they can be assured of my undivided support to our local candidates and to the members of Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod. I think they would not take it against me as I will not bind the party to this choice. It is but my personal choice,” Vice Mayor Duterte said. Kicker Daily News
