Indonesian warships opened fire and subsequently captured the Chinese-flagged ship off its Natuna Islands. According to authorities, no Chinese sailors were harmed in the incident. “Like the previous incidents, the Chinese ships were fishing in the area that we claim is part of our EEZ,” the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/21/world/asia/indonesia-south-china-sea-fishing.html?_r=0">New York Times</a> quoted Atmadji Sumarkidjo, Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs spokesman as saying. <div class="easy-ads"><div class="easy-ads-lite easy-ads-lite-bidvertiser-middle"> </div> </div> “The navy pursued them, and they tried to run away and did not obey our instructions to stop,” he added.  While China does not dispute ownership of the islands, its so-called 9-Dash Line overlaps with Indonesia’s EEZ; creating tension between the two. Indonesian officials vowed to continue safeguarding their country’s territory; with President Joko Widodo ordering his defense chief Security Minister Luhut Panjaitan to shore up their maritime defenses even further. Fisheries Minister Susi Pdujiastuti also praised the Indonesian navy; saying they did the right thing by protecting their territory from criminal trespassers who steal fish from their waters. In an article written by Charina Clarisse Echaluce of <a href="http://www.mb.com.ph/missing-dragon-boat-team-members-body-recovered/">Manila Bulletin</a>, it was disclosed that Philippine Coast Guard Commander Armand Balilo identified the fatality as  Jerome Tipon, 30, a dragon boat rower. On Saturday, April 30, the members of the Alab Sagwan Pilipinas rowing team, which includes Tipon, were practicing in Manila Bay before dawn when water began entering their boat. When the boat capsized, the rescuers rushed to the scene and were able to pick up 21 of the local rowers. Balilo described what happened as a “freak accident” as there were a number of incidents in the past when a boat capsized but no one has died until this time. <div class="easy-ads"><div class="easy-ads-lite easy-ads-lite-bidvertiser-middle"> </div> </div> “Parang freak accident talaga ito. Marami kaming na-encounter before diyan na merong tumataob na mga dragon boat pero wala naman naiuulat na may nasasawi. We’re checking it and the police is already helping us],” he said. Tipon’s body was found floating near the Manila Yacht Club, past 1 a.m. Balilo said they tried to save him but their efforts was not enough. “Hindi namin tinigilan ‘yung search and recovery pero hindi tayo naging  mapalad pero at least nakuha natin ito at nagkaroon na ng closure itong insidente na ‘to [We did not stop the search and recovery but we failed to save him. According to <a href="http://www.thanhniennews.com/society/chinese-vessel-seized-for-illegally-entering-vietnamese-waters-60853.html">Thanh Nien News</a> publication, the Chinese vessel was disguised as a fishing boat but 10,000 liters of diesel oil were found aboard as it passes through the Bach Long Vi island in the Gulf of Tonkin on Thursday where it was intercepted by Vietnamese coast guards. The Chinese boat carrying two sailors and a captain has been towed to the northern port city of Hai Phong. The captain later confessed they were carrying the fuel to be sold to around 100 Chinese fishing boats operating illegally in Vietnamese territory, the state media said. The Chinese government has yet to release a statement on the recent incident which is expected to heighten the tension between the two communist countries, while Vietnam refused to divulge more details about the arrest of the Chinese crew. China and Vietnam is currently entangled in a bitter maritime dispute over the disputed Paracels chain in the South China Sea. Several weeks ago, Beijing deployed a surface-to-air missile system and jet fighters to the Woody island; prompting Hanoi to condemn China’s continuing assertion of power in the disputed territory. Last month, however, Chinese defense minister Chang Wanquan met with Vietnam Communist Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong where the Chinese official urged the two nations to “increase high level exchanges and strategic communication, increase friendly feelings, and deepen border defense exchanges and practical cooperation on U.N. peacekeeping, military academic research and the defense industry.” In response to Chang’s statement, Trong said Hanoi is willing “to cooperate with Beijing to sustain peace and stability on the basis of respecting mutual interests and abiding by internal law.” Vietnam rarely made arrest of illegal Chinese fisherman in the past but the latest incident is widely viewed as a sign of an increasingly fragile diplomatic relations between nation-claimants in disputed South China Sea islands which also include Brunei, Taiwan, Malaysia and the Philippines. <a href="http://kickerdaily.com/vietnam-seizes-chinese-boat-for-intruding-into-its-territorial-waters/" rel="nofollow">Kicker Daily News</a>

According to FB Bubhoy’s captain Junmar Pumicpic, he and his men were fishing in the shoal’s vicinity on the morning of March 5 when they were approached by rubber boats belonging to China’s coast guard. “One of their rubber boats carried three men in uniform. They approached us and told us in English to leave,” he told the <a href="http://globalnation.inquirer.net/137947/chinese-vessels-ram-ph-fishers-boat-at-panatag">Philippine Daily Inquirer</a>. “(They said) ‘this is China Coast Guard. Go back to Subic.’” Pumicpic said they thought the ordeal was seemingly over when the rubber boats returned to the shoal. A few minutes later, however, one of them returned and began ramming their vessel several times. “We were all traumatized by what they did to us. Some of us were shaking. We thought they were going to sink our boat,” he said. While they were shaken by the incident, Pumicpic said his men were able to record a video of the incident and gave a copy to the Philippine Coast Guard in Subic. “We gave the video to the Philippine Coast Guard detachment in Subic. I hope they will make an official report about it,” he said. “We feared for our lives and we thought of our families. But if they intended to kill us, we were determined to fight back.” As for the March 6 incident, Pumicpic said Chinese coast guard vessels drove them away again — this time by shining lasers and powerful lights on their boat. In an article written by Gemi Formaran for <a href="http://www.journal.com.ph/news/top-stories/terror-at-quezon-sea">Journal Online</a> on February 27, it was disclosed that strong waves have damaged the front part of the craft owned by a certain Ronnie Flores, which was then carrying 63 passengers bound for the Quezon Pier. Members of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council, Philippine Coast Guard, Gumaca Municipal Police Station, Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Philippine Army’s 4th Maneuver Platoon have joined in the efforts to rescue those who are on board; which included boat captain Jun Navares and three other crew members. According to Police Inspector Rodel Anda, deputy chief of police of Gumaca, Quezon, Navares tried to maneuver the boat back to its port of origin after the accident, but the damage has caused the vessel to sink very quickly. However, the 32-year-old captain was not able to give his official statement about the incident to the authorities since he was nowhere to be found during the course of the investigation. The fatalities were identified as Kalibo-resident Susan Tajara, 53; Quezon-resident Isabelita Olivers, 52; and public school teacher Rosefel Pulumbarit, 46. <a href="http://kickerdaily.com/boat-sinks-in-quezon-province/" rel="nofollow">Kicker Daily News</a>
