Although it will not also be among those competing in this year’s Cinemalaya, Hermano Puli will instead have its special gala premiere as the closing movie on August 13 at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo or the Main Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

Directed by Gil Portes, the movie recounts the life of one of our country’s bravest albeit lesser known heroes, Apolinario dela Cruz, who was also known as Hermano Puli.

“I am proud to be a part of this year’s Cinemalaya with my latest film as this festival is very close to my heart,” the director told InterAksyon.

Actor Aljur Abrenica will bring to life the early 19th century leader who led a revolt against the Spaniards in the name of religious freedom and equality.

The cast also includes Louise Delos Reyes, Enzo Pineda, Menggie Cubarrubias, Kristoffer Martin, Arnold Reyes, Markki Stroem, Simon Ibarra, Vin Abrenica, Allen Abrenica, Sue Prado, Kiko Matos, Stella Canete, Diva Montelaba, Abel Estanislao, and Alvin Fortuna.

The August premiere will be the culmination of all the hard work the cast and crew put in. Abrenica said he did extensive research about the Hermano Puli; even going as far as visiting the hero’s hometown of Lucban, Quezon to do research about his life and the religious lay organization Cofradia de San Jose [Confraternity of Saint Joseph] which he founded.

Hermano Puli was a vocal advocate of allowing native-born Filipino priests to serve the Church but was chided by the Spanish friars. Later, colonial authorities suppressed the group under suspicions that it was a political organization meant to overthrow their rule.

The movie is produced by T-Rex Entertainment.

Watch the trailer here:

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

Kicker Daily News

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-3942681860132668" data-ad-slot="4831328630" data-ad-format="auto"></ins>
