Silver medalist Diaz, who ended the 20-year medal drought of the Philippines in the Olympics, checked out of the athletes’ village in the seaside city of Ipanema, Brazil on Tuesday, August 11 then boarded an Emirates flight back to her home country where a hero’s welcome fitting for a weightlifting queen awaits her. “Excited na ako umuwi pero malungkot ako kasi iiwan ko na kayo. Napamahal na ako sa lahat ng kasama ko dito,” said <a href="http://news.abs-cbn.com/sports/08/10/16/jubilant-diaz-flying-back-home">Diaz</a> when she bid goodbye to fellow Filipino athletes in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil who are yet to fight in their respective events. I loved being with all of you.] After a thanksgiving dinner hosted by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) at the Fogo de Chao, a fancy Brazillian steakhouse, Diaz, along with weightlifter Nestor Colonia and coach Alfonso Aldanete, were brought to the airport with POC second vice president Colonel Jeff Tamayo. The group left Brazil at 2am Wednesday bound to a 25-hour trip to Dubai. The team is expected to touch down at NAIA terminal 3 at around 5PM, Thursday. <div class="easy-ads"><div class="easy-ads-lite easy-ads-lite-bidvertiser-middle"> </div> </div> In Diaz’s itinerary, she will board the plane again at 7:40PM bound to Davao City with her parents Eduardo and Emelita and Philippine Sports Commission chairman William Ramirez to meet President Rodrigo Duterte. Pres. Duterte will receive the Filipina weightlifter at the presidential guest house in Davao City. Diaz will stay overnight in Davao City then fly back to Zamboanga City early Friday on board a private plane courtesy of sports patron Manny V. Pangilinan for her homecoming. If plans push through, a press conference is being planned at around 6pm at the hotel. On top of the P5-million cash incentive of Diaz from the Philippine government and a house and lot, the Zamboanga local government has earmarked P500,000 cash incentive to its proud daughter. Apart from the cash prizes that await Diaz, the Filipina weightlifting queen shall be accorded with the love and attention of the whole Filipino nation to rejoice her victory. Diaz placed the Philippines in the international scene last Sunday with her silver finish victory as she was feted with the following distinctions: for having her country’s first Olympic medal since 1996, first Filipino to medal in Olympic weightlifting, first Filipina to earn an Olympic medal, first non-boxer to medal for the Philippines since 1936 and first Olympic medalist from Mindanao. Marcos receives a hero’s burial? For his son, outgoing senator and defeated vice presidential candidate Bongbong Marcos, it will bring closure to their family and will heal a divided nation. In an article written by Virgil Lopez of <a href="http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/569612/news/nation/bongbong-hero-s-burial-for-my-father-to-bring-closure-healing#sthash.QtoF11gm.dpuf">GMA News</a>, it was disclosed that Bongbong thanked President-elect Rodrigo Duterte for allowing the remains of the late president to be buried at the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani in Taguig City. “I think this will bring closure not only to my family but to the nation as well,” Bongbong noted in a press conference. Bongbong is the second child and only son of the late President and current Ilocos Norte Rep. According to the AFP spokesman Col. Benjamin Hao, the Heroes’ Cemetery is a property where Filipino soldiers, war veterans, heroes and martyrs are laid to rest, Elena Aben of <a href="http://www.mb.com.ph/afp-rules-for-libingan-ng-mga-bayani/">Manila Bulletin</a> wrote. The country’s presidents, national artists, scientists, dignitaries and AFP chiefs of staff are also buried in the 103-hectare cemetery. Currently, around 49,000 are laid to rest in the Heroes’ Cemetery. The proposed burial of Marcos in the same cemetery and incoming president Rodrigo Duterte’s approval has gained opposing reactions. The Marcoses, their allies and supporters, has long been pushing for a hero’s burial for the late president; citing his accomplishments as a former soldier and head of the state. However, Martial Law victims, different groups including families of those buried in the cemetery strongly oppose the proposal. An online petition on <a href="https://www.change.org/p/rodrigo-duterte-no-to-burying-marcos-in-heroes-cemetery">Change.org</a>  initiated by Dolly De Leon, claimed that Marcos is not a hero and stated that only heroes are allowed to be buried in the cemetery. However, his remains still lie in the refrigerated crypt in Ilocos Norte and his family has been waiting for a decision whether he will be given a hero’s burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. In line with this, 2016 top position candidates were asked with regards to their stand on Marcos finally being given a hero’s burial at the Heroes’ Cemetery; a national cemetery within Fort Bonifacio in Western Bicutan, Taguig City. LP’s vice presidential bet, Leni Robredo, gives her stand; as disclosed in a report written by correspondent Nestor Corrales and published by <a href="http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/769136/leni-robredo-marcos-doesnt-deserve-heros-burial">Inquirer.net</a>. In an ambush interview while in Bulacan on Saturday, February 27, Robredo bares her thoughts on the matter; saying that she is not in favor of the late president Marcos being buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. Defending her stand she explained, “I think living through its name, that is a place where Filipinos, who were being looked up to, had contributed a lot and had been a model to his countrymen, are being buried.” She also reiterated that there should not be a special treatment on who will be buried in Philippine Heroes’ Cemetery. Returning with a question on whether Marcos is deserving enough, she asked, “Ang tanong ngayon, deserving ba iyong dating pangulong Marcos para ilibing doon? Siya ba ang halimbawa ng isang Pilipino na nagbuwis ng buhay, nagsakripisyo nang husto para sa ating bansa? Kasi iyon ang simbolo.” [ The question now is — Is the former president Marcos deserving of being buried there? Was he an example of a Filipino who shed his life, sacrificed a lot for our country? Because that is the symbol.] She stands firm on her conviction that the former president does not deserve a hero’s burial. On a similar account, in an article written by correspondent Myla Ager and published by <a href="http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/769121/poe-clarifies-granting-marcos-heros-burial-should-be-in-accordance-with-law">Inquirer.net</a>, presidential bet Grace Poe clarified her stand on the Marcos burial issue, saying: “Marcos’ burial should be in accordance with the law.” This was because of the issue wherein she allegedly said, that if she wins in the presidential bid, she will allow a state burial for the late president Marcos.
