Cristy Guinto, who works as a domestic helper in the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), told her story as a mother struggling homesickness and actual illness working in a foreign country. She was given an opportunity to ask the five presidential candidates about their respective platforms for OFWs like her and in ensuring stable jobs in the Philippines. Guinto says she is forced to stay in Dubai for work despite having been diagnosed with a health condition due to having little job opportunities in the Philippines. She is currently drowned in debt, has no medical insurance in UAE, and has even attempted to take her own life due to the desperation. “Masyadong mahirap po kasi lalo na ‘pag may sakit. Parang feeling ko nag-iisa ako. Feeling ko ako na lang tao sa mundo, tapos ang dami ko pang financial problem [It is very difficult especially when suffering with an illness. It’s like I feel that I am alone. I feel like I’m the only person in the world, with so many financial problems],” she told <a href="http://news.abs-cbn.com/halalan2016/video/global-filipino/04/26/16/ofw-in-pilipinas-debates-2016-gets-job-offer-in-ph">ABS-CBN News</a> in an interview which aired after the debates. <div class="easy-ads"><div class="easy-ads-lite easy-ads-lite-bidvertiser-middle"> </div> </div> After her story was featured during the debates last April 24, Elsie Chua, a Filipino-Chinese businesswoman in the real estate and tableware industry who happened to be traveling in Dubai at that time, decided to offer her kababayan a job back in the Philippines. “Pwede ko siyang isama ko sa hotel housekeeping. Sa akin lang ang importante dito wala siyang maipadalang pera dahil sa utang monthly. E doon, may trabaho ka na, kasama mo pa ‘yung pamilya mo. ‘Yun ang importante. [I can hire her in hotel housekeeping. For me, the important thing is, she cannot send money because of her monthly debt. But there, she will have a job, she will be with her family. That is what’s important],” Chua explained. In addition, the businesswoman plans to help Guinto finish at least her high school education for more job opportunities, as well as to support her young daughter’s schooling. Guinto is elated with the prospect of a stable job waiting for her in the Philippines as she prepares to return home. “Parang may nakikita po akong magandang kinabukasan pag-uwi ko sa Pilipinas na may naghihintay na trabaho para sa akin. [It’s like I see a beautiful future for me when I go home to the Philippines now that there is a job waiting for me],” she said. The Consulate of the Philippines in Dubai promised to assist Guinto with the necessary paperwork when she decides to finally go home. Bongbong just shrugged it off, saying it was just a “standard political strategy” of candidates who are trying to catch up with the front runner. Old promises In his second viral <a href="https://www.facebook.com/bruce.rivera/posts/10154055808384637?fref=nf">Facebook</a> post, Rivera chided presidential candidates Grace Poe, VP Jejomar Binay and Mar Roxas for parroting the old and usual promises expected of a politician during election; considering the fact that they have been given the chance to fulfill these having all of them held incumbent national positions. Locsin also said that English is the language of “combat and not of sissiness” as he further stressed: “English is the language of men. Tagalog sounds manly only when clipped and short like English.”  In addition, the broadcaster noted that both Poe and Roxas are supposedly “masters of the civilized English” thus he said, the two bets should have used English during their exchange. With this, Locsin later earned the ire of the public specifically those at the academe and was labeled as elitist and anti-Filipino. He was even corrected by commenters by saying that the national language is Filipino and not Tagalog. As such, the Alyansa ng mga Tagapagtanggol ng Wika or “Tanggol Wika,” a collective of professors, lawmakers, and artists from more than 70 colleges and universities, cited several points that debunk Locsin’s views. Filipino is the language of the 99 percent of Filipinos and that since the presidential debate is a government-organized event, it should be in Filipino, the alliance claimed. Furthermore, Locsin’s apology for his remarks which reportedly belittled and insulted the country’s national language is sought by the group. Currently being praised by social media users is JP Maunes, CEO of the Philippine Accessible Deaf Services, Inc. (PADS) and his fellow interpreters for their sign language work amid the contentious debate which saw off-the-cuff and no-holds-barred remarks flying among the candidates on more than one occasion during the hours-long event. “Last night’s TV interpreting success of the 2nd presidential debates was made possible through the collaborative efforts of fellow interpreters and Deaf leaders. We prepared at least 2 weeks reviewing the first debates videos and anticipating for the given topics and possible signs, jargons and scenarios that might come out including the F*** words haha. Special thanks to Tricia Oftana of Oftana Suites for providing us support during the training,” Maunes wrote on his <a href="https://www.facebook.com/jp.e.maunes?ref=ts&fref=ts">Facebook</a>. At the same time, Maunes called on the public to make sure organizers of the next presidential debate enlarge their inset to make it more readable to the PWD community. “I would like to urge the Filipino Deaf community to rally and use social media to inform the management of TV5 to increase the sign language inset for the ongoing presidential debates! The inset size is ridiculous! This is not accessible at all!” he wrote. Aside from Maunes and his team, one other personality being feted is TV5 journalist Luchi Cruz-Valdez for maintaining her composure and helping steer the debate in the right direction amid her earlier row with Vice President Jejomar Binay over his bringing of notes. In an article written by Trisha Macas for <a href="http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/555797/news/nation/slow-talker-duterte-frowns-on-time-limits-during-presidential-debates">GMA News Online</a>, it was disclosed that the PDP-Laban standard bearer has admitted that he will not be able to express himself properly with the given time limit since he is a “slow-talker” who tends to process things in his mind before explaining such thoughts verbally. “I’m a slow talker. What I conceive in my head, the gray matter between my ears, takes a long time for me to express orally,” Duterte said. The hosting networks have established the time limit in order to address problems on airtime constraints that could be experienced if the candidates will be given the opportunity to speak without limitations. However, the idea does not sit well on Duterte, who said that he is not comfortable with such an idea. “Sasabihin ko sa moderator, ‘Kung gusto mo, ikaw na lang ang magdaldal. Bakit mo ako iipitin? Pasasalitain mo lang ako ng 30 seconds? Solohin mo na. Ano ang masasabi ko sa 30 seconds?’ [I will tell the moderator, ‘If you want, you can be the one to speak. Why will you limit me? The petition for Certiorari and Prohibition with Prayer for Preliminary Mandatory Injunction under Rule 65 of the 1997 Rules of Civil Procedure was filed on Friday, February 19, against Andres Bautista in his capacity as the chairman of the Commission on Elections (Comelec). According to a copy of the petition posted on <a href="http://www.rappler.com/views/123020-rappler-sues-comelec-chief-sc-debates">Rappler</a>, the petition seeks to nullify pertinent parts of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) executed between the Comelec Chairman and various media networks (ABS-CBN, GMA Network, Inc., TV5 Network, Inc., and Nine Media Corporation) signed on January 13, 2016 for being executed without or in excess of jurisdiction or with grave abuse of discretion amounting to lack or excess of jurisdiction and for violating the fundamental rights of Rappler, Inc. protected under the Constitution; and to prohibit Comelec from enforcing the provisions of the MOA. According to Rappler’s article regarding their suit before the SC, the network filed the petition because the decision of Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista “to grant broadcast rights to the upcoming presidential and vice presidential debates only to the nation’s biggest commercial television companies and their chosen partners is out of touch with reality.” Rappler claims that “instead of ensuring a wider distribution of the debate, the Comelec Chairman granted exclusive broadcasting and live-streaming rights to hand-picked partners – to the detriment of all other media outlets, including the government-owned PTV4.” The social news network contends that their constitutional right to equal protection has been violated and that discriminating against their network is a restraint on their free press rights. Rappler added that “(a)ll of these betray the Comelec’s mission to educate the general public on matters that affect the choices they will make in May.” The network also claims that the Comelec Chairman may have violated the Anti-Graft Law because the benefits and advantages given to these “lead networks” are unwarranted and were granted without the benefit of any transparent or equitable process such as a public bidding. Rappler further explained that the suit was brought exclusively against the chairman of the Comelec because it appears that he acted without the support of the other Commissioners.
