Santiago admitted encountering some from far provinces such as <b>Laguna and</b> <b>Quezon </b>just to pay respect to the late <b>Iron Lady</b>.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">“I’m happy that people are still showing their love and affection for her,” he told.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">From October 31 to November 2, people came to visit all throughout the day even staying late until 10 at night. On the first day of November, during All <b>Souls Day</b>, at least 200 people came to visit, many youths came by saying they missed the senator’s pick-up lines.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">Santiago admitted visiting his wife’s grave every day, bringing three roses as he prayed and cried on the tomb, even embracing it from time to time.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">“I really miss Miriam. Biro mo we were together and happily married for more than 50 years. Now, suddenly she’s gone. Tomas (UST) on Thursday, May 5, the solon said the administration’s ‘Daang Matuwid’ had become a symbol of disappointment for Filipinos because of the government’s numerous unkept promises.</p><br/><p>“The righteous path that the administration has campaigned on in 2010 turned out to be the ultimate frustration of the Filipino people,” the <a href="http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/783458/miriam-santiago-daang-matuwid-is-the-ultimate-frustration-of-filipinos">Philippine Daily Inquirer</a> quoted her as saying.</p><br/><div class="easy-ads"><div class="easy-ads-lite easy-ads-lite-bidvertiser-middle"><br/><br/></div><br/></div><br/><p>As an example of the government’s failures, Santiago cited how it cannot even come up with an effective traffic solution in Manila.</p><br/><p>“<em>Pinangakuan tayo ng matuwid na daan, anong matuwid eh papuntang UST ang traffic ang bigat-bigat </em>[We were promised a straight path, but how could that even be if the traffic on the way to UST is so heavy.],” she said.</p><br/><p>Santiago also mentioned the administration’s failure to pass the Freedom of Information (FOI) and the Anti-Premature Campaigning bills which she lobbied and authored respectively in the Senate as more proof of its shortcomings.</p><br/><p>“The administration has failed to implement many reforms to curb corruption. These include the Freedom of Information Bill or Law, which I strongly supported in the Senate, and the Anti-Premature Campaigning Law,” she said.</p><br/><p>Santiago, a consistent dead-ender in the surveys, is gunning for the presidency for the third time. Miriam Defensor-Santiago promised on Friday that she will definitely go after political aspirants who engaged in premature political advertisements and disregarded the campaign period specified by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).</p><br/><p>In an article written by Anne Estanislao for <a href="http://cnnphilippines.com/news/2016/04/29/santiago-to-prosecute-pre-campaign-advertisers.html">CNN Philippines</a> on April 29, 2016, it was disclosed that the presidential candidate tagged with vice-presidential bet Sen. Ferdinand “<em>Bongbong</em>” Marcos, Jr. said that it is imperative for aspiring leaders to follow the rule of law.</p><br/><p>“<em>I will seek the criminal prosecution of all people who engaged in pre-campaign advertising, the law sets up a penalty for people guilty of that offense. I will try my best that those guilty are prosecuted,</em>” Santiago said.</p><br/><p>According to a Comelec regulation, a candidate who will be proven guilty of premature campaigning will face a criminal offense and will be disqualified from public office.</p><br/><p>However, the Supreme Court revised the rule in 2006; saying that the Comelec can only impose penalties on candidates who have committed offenses during the official campaign period.</p><br/><p>“<em>In 2006, the Supreme Court said it’s just freedom of expression,</em>” said Atty. Rudyard Avila; an election lawyer.</p><br/><div class="easy-ads"><div class="easy-ads-lite easy-ads-lite-bidvertiser-middle"><br/><br/></div><br/></div><br/><p>Meanwhile, AGB Nielsen Media Research Philippines, Inc. has released the list of <span class="highlightNode">top spenders</span> during the first two months of the campaign in line with the local and national elections; saying that at least two persons running for president have already breached half of the limit set by the Comelec.</p><br/><p>Vice President Jejomar Binay, who is currently running as the standard-bearer of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), had already spent nearly P385 million, while independent presidential candidate Sen. Grace Poe-Llamanzares has utilized over P331 million worth of funds.</p><br/><p>The administration’s bet, Liberal Party standard-bearer Manuel “Mar” Roxas II, have already spent P158 million during the two-month period; not counting the expenses for advertisements he made with his running mate, Camarines Sur Rep. Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo.</p><br/><p>Interestingly, presidential survey forerunner Mayor Rodrigo Duterte of Davao City, who serves as the standard-bearer of the PDP-Laban party, landed only on the fourth rank in the list of top campaign spenders; having spent only P110 million for political campaigns; already including his tandem advertisements with Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano.</p><br/><p>Atty. Apolonia Comia-Soguilon, the presidential candidate tagged by political analysts as an “unknown candidate,” only spent P195 thousand as a replacement bet for the late OFW Family Club party-list Rep. Roy Señerez.</p><br/><p>Lastly, Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago said she wants a lifestyle check done as the money they spent was grossly disproportionate to their own net worth.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">“They spent at least five times the net worth they have declared for ads. One candidate even spent 17 times his net worth. Where did they get the money? If the public is to speculate, they would think that these candidates have either stolen from public funds or peddled their influence,” she told the <a href="http://www.philstar.com:8080/headlines/2016/03/10/1561499/miriam-wants-rivals-subjected-lifestyle-check">Philippine Star</a>.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">Santiago added that the public deserve to know if the candidates are dipping their hands in government funds or are being bankrolled by interest groups.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">“Almost all of these candidates are incumbent public officials, and have access to government funds. They are also prohibited by law from receiving gifts ‘if the value of the gift is under the circumstances manifestly excessive,’” she said. “The people deserve to know who bankrolled the campaigns of elective officials so that when a campaign contributor enjoys benefits to the detriment of the public under the official’s watch, the people would know who to hold accountable.”</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">According to the PCIJ report which covered the pre-campaign period from January 2015 to January 2016, four presidentiables have spent a combined P3.2 billion on ads.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">Vice President Jejomar Binay, who declared a net worth of P60.2 million in 2014, reportedly spent P1.05 billion during that period. Next to him is Sen. <ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Miriam Defensor-Santiago vows to to revive the country’s agricultural sector</strong></li><br/><li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Her government will introduce reforms and invest in research and modern technology</strong></li><br/><li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Santiago says her administration will offer finance programs to farmers </strong></li><br/></ul><p style="text-align: justify;">MANILA, Philippines  – Presidential aspirant Miriam Defensor-Santiago vowed to reinvigorate the country’s agriculture industry by investing in research and modern technology if elected president in 2016.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">Santiago, who was a Secretary of Agrarian Reform during the time of former president Cory Aquino, said she was able to distribute land titles to the rightful owners during her term in the Cabinet.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">If elected in Malacañang, the senator vowed  to introduce reforms in the agricultural sector which, despite growing a meager 0.11 % annually, has posted a 0.96 percent contraction in output in the fourth quarter of 2015, according to <em><strong><a href="http://agstat.psa.gov.ph/?ids=agriperformance">Philippine Statistics Authority</a></strong></em> (PSA).</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;"><em>“Mahalagang mag-invest tayo sa research and technology para umangat ulit ang industriya ng agrikultura sa ating bansa,”</em> Santiago said in a statement on her official <a href="https://www.facebook.com/senmiriam/photos/a.10150117700995352.394453.96427505351/10156574675170352/?type=3&theater"><em><strong>Facebook</strong> </em></a>page. Ramos in the 1992 presidential election, but Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago kept something from those memories —  a sunglasses.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">Miriam run for president in 1992 and was considered the frontrunner in many surveys leading to the election; only to lose to Ramos five days into the counting of ballots.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">On her Facebook post, the Ilonggo senator shared a picture of herself wearing the same sunglasses in two pictures that are more than two decades apart.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">“I still have my vintage round sunglasses that I used 24 years ago when I first ran for president #ThrowbackThursday,” she captioned the photo.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">The picture earned more than 58,000 likes from her supporters and social media followers and was shared nearly 1,500 times.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">In the 1992 election, Santiago placed runner-up to Ramos who was declared victor after garnering 23.58% of the total votes, compared to her 19.72%.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">Santiago cried foul and claimed to have been cheated by the Ramos camp; citing incidence of massive power outage nationwide during the canvassing of ballots. She filed an electoral protest which was eventually dismissed.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">She ran again in 1998 and lost for the second time; this time to popular movie actor and former San Juan City Mayor Joseph Estrada. The two eventually became allies with Santiago even defending Estrada during the historic impeachment trial.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">More than 20 years later, Santiago is trying her luck at the presidency for the third time.
