MANILA, Philippines – With just days to go before the May 9 elections, Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago blasted the Aquino administration and accused it of failing to implement the reforms it promised six years ago.
In her talk at the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) on Thursday, May 5, the solon said the administration’s ‘Daang Matuwid’ had become a symbol of disappointment for Filipinos because of the government’s numerous unkept promises.
“The righteous path that the administration has campaigned on in 2010 turned out to be the ultimate frustration of the Filipino people,” the Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted her as saying.
As an example of the government’s failures, Santiago cited how it cannot even come up with an effective traffic solution in Manila.
“Pinangakuan tayo ng matuwid na daan, anong matuwid eh papuntang UST ang traffic ang bigat-bigat [We were promised a straight path, but how could that even be if the traffic on the way to UST is so heavy.],” she said.
Santiago also mentioned the administration’s failure to pass the Freedom of Information (FOI) and the Anti-Premature Campaigning bills which she lobbied and authored respectively in the Senate as more proof of its shortcomings.
“The administration has failed to implement many reforms to curb corruption. These include the Freedom of Information Bill or Law, which I strongly supported in the Senate, and the Anti-Premature Campaigning Law,” she said.
Santiago, a consistent dead-ender in the surveys, is gunning for the presidency for the third time. Despite her low poll standing, the feisty senator — a consistent favorite of students and the younger set of voters — remains optimistic she will win through the youth vote.
