- Miriam Defensor Santiago is students’ overwhelming choice for president
- Feisty senator tops presidential polls in nearly a dozen campuses nationwide
- Santiago pleased with the results, hopes students can convince their families to vote for her, too
MANILA, Philippines – Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago is the undisputed queen on campus.
After consistently topping several presidential polls held before the start of the official campaign period, the feisty senator once again came out first in three surveys held since it began.
At the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) where 696 participants cast their votes, Santiago came out on top with 43.2 percent, followed by Sen. Grace Poe with 18 percent, Mar Roxas with 15.5 percent, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte with 14.9 percent, and Vice President Jejomar Binay with 8.3 percent.
At Holy Angel University in Pampanga where 5,000 students cast their votes via an online survey, Santiago placed first with 40 percent, followed by Duterte with 34 percent, Poe with 12 percent, Binay with 7 percent, and Roxas with 4 percent.
At Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Calamba, Santiago won the poll with 58.48 percent, followed by Duterte with 27.68 percent, Poe with 7.59 percent, Binay with 3.57 percent, and Roxas with 2.68 percent.
Commenting on her status as the students’ favorite candidate, a pleased Santiago said she hopes students would also be able to convince their families to vote for her in the upcoming elections.
“It appears that if all university students go out to vote in the May elections and influence their peers and elders to throw their support behind me, I will be the next president of the Philippines,” she told the Manila Bulletin.
Only one other candidate, Duterte, has topped a university poll — Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan – shortly after the first presidential debate was held in Cagayan de Oro City.
