This protest was dubbed as<b> “Lakbayan”</b> of National Minorities for Self Determination and Just Peace.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">This is not the first time that thousands of indigenous people from Mindanao, including the Lumads and Moros, marched to Metro Manila from their ancestral lands to demand recognition for their basic human rights.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>“Manilakbayan”</b> is the term for their journey towards the city. </div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">The indigenous people were on the road since October 8, making short stop-overs in between regions to call for support.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">Last year’s <b>Manilakbayan 2015</b> only brought Lumads to the capital, but this year they banded with the Moros on the hopes that there would be a greater chance for their demands to be heard.   </div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">They are here to scrap unjust laws and stop militarization from ruining their ancestral homes.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">For them, their land is their life. The destruction of their ancestral lands strongly affects their livelihood. Today, they are displaced from their culture and many of their human rights are trampled. </div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">The Lumads are based in Mindanao and are divided into 18 distinct ethnic groups. They hold 63% of the population. They are situated at remote places where most of the multi-national mining and logging companies come to exploit their local natural resources. </div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">The Lumads were forced to vacate their ancestral homes to be safe, leaving behind their mineral-rich lands and abandoning their fields and ancestral domains.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">The rampant militarization and exploitation in their lands is a violation of their basic human rights, as large battalions of armed troops push them out of their homes. Even at home they feel unsafe.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">The threat against the Lumads’ livelihoods caused various organizations to render their help. </div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">And now, every once in a while, these Lumads march to Manila in the hopes that their voices will be heard and the government will consider their situation.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">Although the <b>Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA)</b> passed in 1997 was enacted to help ensure the self-determination of indigenous peoples, it is obviously not being implemented today.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">Malayao from <b>National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP)</b> believes that since its implementation, the IPRA, “rather than stand for the rights and interests of Indigenous Peoples, has acted more for the benefit of the government and big businesses.” </div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">Indigenous people’s rights activists who joined the Lakbayan strongly doubt that IPRA and the Mining Act will solve their problems.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">Recently, the indigenous people, along with militant groups rallied in front of the US embassy where they were subjected to even more violence by the police.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">These indigenous people are currently situated at the campus of the University of the Philippines Diliman and anyone is free to come and integrate with them.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img alt="EDIT: Why Do Indigenous People Go To Manila And Protest? Despite the hasty attempt of the people to ran for safety, some were still hit by the vehicle.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">“The dispersal at the US embassy happened as the rally was about to end. While 18 other indigenous people along with a member of the media, a doctor, nurse and health volunteer have been arrested and are now under the custody of <b>Manila Police District Headquarter</b>. According to inquirer, 50 protestants were injured.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Police Officer 3 Franklin Kho</b>, the police who drove the vehicle claimed that his act was in response to the protestant’s attempt to flip the vehicle over.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">“Inaagaw ng mga raliyista yung sasakyan, kaya napilitan akong kunin yung sasakyan, kaya napaatras ko. Oscar Albayalde of NCRPO also denied the claims saying it was an act of defense from the security forces.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">“Hindi naman sila sinagasaan (They weren’t run over). The rallyists were trying to flip over the patrol car,” he said. “In the process, the driver extricated the patrol car and inadvertently hit some unruly protesters who sustained minor injuries.”</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">He also emphasized that aside from the casualties on the side of the protestants, 32 civil disturbance management cops were also injured. He stated that they plan on filing charges of illegal assembly and direct assault against the protestants who were arrested.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">“While we respect the freedom of assembly and speech in exercise of democracy, we cannot tolerate violations of the law and breach in peace and security by people who tend to go beyond it. Democracy does not mean that the law of the land can be ,” Albayalde added.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">According to Reyes, police authorities also used a tear gas in the attempt to disperse the thousand anti-US protestors. Marcos be interred at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, kindly undertake the necessary planning and preparations to facilitate the coordination of all agencies concerned specially the provisions for ceremonial and security requirements. Joel Napoleon to let the protesters near the Embassy on the condition they won’t throw stones or do anything unruly.</p><br/><p>During the rally, the militants blasted Kerry’s arrival and urged President Rodrigo Duterte not to honor the EDCA.</p><br/><div class="easy-ads"><div class="easy-ads-lite easy-ads-lite-bidvertiser-middle"><br/><br/></div><br/></div><br/><p>Things went physical for a while after protesters tried to break through the agreed demarcation line. However, all was well again after National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Chief Supt. Bongbong Marcos before the Supreme Court.</p><br/><p>According to the video posted on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/DayaangMatuwidLP/?fref=ts">Facebook page Dayaang Matuwid</a>, Robredo met Bautista July 12, 2016, eight hours after the high tribunal—sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET)—ordered her to reply to Marcos’ electoral protest. Both are respondents in the case.</p><br/><p>“Barely 8 hours after the Supreme Court made the order, Leni Robredo held a secret meeting with fellow respondent and Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista at the 10<sup>th</sup> floor of the Urdaneta Apartments in Makati,” the video claimed. “The meeting was held at the unit of socialite Baby Cruz.”</p><br/><p>The video itself shows Robredo entering Urdaneta Apartments accompanied by members of her security detail, and noting that she left at around 10:26 PM.</p><br/><div class="easy-ads"><div class="easy-ads-lite easy-ads-lite-bidvertiser-middle"><br/><br/></div><br/></div><br/><p>The video also shows Bautista leaving Urdaneta Apartments at 10:30 PM or four minutes after Robredo left.</p><br/><p>“As the electoral case is still pending in the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET), the Filipino people would like to know: Is it legal for the Comelec Chairman to meet and favor the (alleged) fraudulent party? Herrera and John Paolo Bencito mentioned in their article for <a href="http://thestandard.com.ph/news/headlines/203337/-noynoying-noy-breaks-silence.html">The Standard</a> dated April 10, 2016 that President Aquino admitted he only learned about the bloody dispersal where three farmers were killed after local policemen opened fired at them on April 1 while he was in Cavite.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">“We were on our way back to Manila when DILG Sec.
