Doctors in Pakistan cannot describe the exact cause of their condition but are subjecting the brothers to medical treatments and examinations. </div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">‘Our doctors are doing medical tests to determine why these kids remain active in the day but cannot open their eyes, why they cannot talk or eat when the sun goes down.’ <b>Javed Akram</b>, a professor of medicine at the Pakistan Institute of <b>Medical Sciences</b>, said.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">The brothers acquired the nickname ‘<b>Solar Boys’</b> and have been under observation in a hospital in Islamabad, Pakistan since the start of the year. They have undergone more than 300 tests so far.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Doctors </b>primarily hypothesized that they might be getting their energy from the <b>sunlight</b>. However, they already ruled this out as the boys were able to move in a dark, enclosed room during daytime. They also found out that the <b>boys </b>were not <b>suffering </b>from nerve damage or sleep paralysis, which is a condition wherein the <b>body </b>becomes <b>paralyzed </b>during REM sleep while the brain remains awake.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">They are now looking at the idea that the condition is related to the boys’ <b>genetics</b>, as their parents are first cousins – a practice that is not rare in Pakistan. In the <b>US</b>, 1 out of 8 is likely to develop this within their lifetime. While it is very important to diagnose it at its early stages, most women who acquire the disease are not able to identify its symptoms and undergo chemotherapy during the crucial stages. While this infamous <b>chemotherapy</b> <b>kills the cancer cells</b>, it also kills the good cells, which leads to the deterioration of the <b>body’s immune system</b>, thereby lessening the patient’s chance of survival.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">But a study in Amsterdam may have just found the right alternative to chemo, claiming to cure breast cancer in just <b>11 days</b>!</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">The research was presented by <b>Professor Nigel Bundered</b> of the <b>European Breast </b>Cancer <b>Conference held in Amsterdam</b>. They studied the effectiveness of the drugs <b>Herceptin (aka trastuzumab) and Lapatinib</b>. Both have already been used for the treatment of breast cancer. However, this was the first time that the drugs were combined together. They had to test the pair’s ability to conquer a protein called human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 or HER2 which plays a key role in the growth and division of cancer cells. </div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">They did the test on 257 women with breast cancer who were HER2 positive. They divided the number into two, half of which would take the pair, while the other half would be the control group who would take the Herceptin alone. The results? The half who took the drug combo had significant changes on their cancer! 11% was found out to be cleared of cancer within 2 weeks, while 17% had dramatically shrunk tumors. On the other hand, only 3% of the control group showed a change in their tumor size.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">The study was funded by Cancer Research UK. However, the study still needs to run some tests and still has a long way to go before getting into the market. This, they said, suggested that miRNAs may carry epigenetic information from obese fathers to their daughters.</p><br/><div class="easy-ads"><div class="easy-ads-lite easy-ads-lite-bidvertiser-middle"><br/><br/></div><br/></div><br/><p>Scientists noted that the miRNAs they identified regulate insulin receptor signalling that can be linked to alterations in body weight and other features which is associated with cancer development specifically hypoxia.</p><br/><p>As such, the researchers disclosed that maternal obesity is believed to influence breast cancer in humans.</p><br/><p>Meanwhile, Sonia de Assis, assistant professor in the department of oncology at Georgetown, explained that their study was done in mice. In the United Kingdom, hundreds of people die each year because of human organ donor shortage. Scientists hope that the part-pig, part-human creatures will lead to a sustainable way to grow and harvest human organs for patients</p><br/><p>University of California, Davis researchers’ team said that pigs injected with human stem cells should look and behave like normal pigs. The only exception, according to them, is that one organ of these pigs will be composed of human cells.</p><br/><p>Developing human-pig chimeras will take 28 days before the pregnancies are terminated and the tissue removed for analysis, wrote <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/health-36437428"><u>BBC</u></a>’s Fergus Walsh.</p><br/><p>In an article written by Kevin Rawlinson and Nicola Davis that was published on <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/2016/jun/05/organ-research-scientists-combine-human-stem-cells-and-pig-dna"><u>The Guardian</u></a>, scientists combined human induced pluripotent or iPS stem cells with pig DNA inside a pig embryo. Scientists hope that the part-pig, part-human creatures will lead to a sustainable way to grow and harvest human organs for patients</p><br/><p>University of California, Davis researchers’ team said that pigs injected with human stem cells should look and behave like normal pigs.
