However, it’s how you react to critique that matters so much more.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">This guy from <b>University </b>of the <b>Philippines Los Baños </b>did something amazing with the criticism that was given to him by his <b>blockmate</b>.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Nol</b> <b>Montalbo</b>, an alumni of <b>UPLB </b>shared his story on <b>Facebook</b>.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">Being one of the laziest student in his block, nobody wanted to partner up with him during class projects. According to him, everyone knew that he would not contribute anything. </div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">After one of his laboratory classes, one of his blockmates compared his exam score to his: “<b>Ang BOBO </b>mo kasi!” When his blockmate told him that, he said it felt like boiling water was poured onto him. He was embarrassed because his blockmate said it loudly for everyone to hear. That’s the time that he told himself, “Hindi pwede ‘to.” </div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">He studied hard and pushed himself to do his best. </div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">While studying, he worked at Wendy’s, was given lead roles in most of theatre performances and was also awarded Best Thesis by 5 institutions and many more! </div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">As a result of his hard work, he and his blockmate graduated <b>Cum Laude</b>. However, <b>Montalbo </b>finished college first. In just 3.5 years, he accomplished <b>BS Biology </b>major in <b>Genetics</b>. He also got the “<b>Distinguished</b> <b>Alumni Award 2016</b>“. </div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">So like Monatlbo, let no one stop you from achieving your goals and reaching for your dreams. Late ako pumasok, nangongopya ng assignments, delayed ang submission ng projects, palpak ang exams at kung ano ano pa. Inaaway nga ako ng blockmates ko dahil wala akong gana mag-aral. Ayaw nila ako maging ka-group sa projects kasi alam nilang zero contribution ako. Feeling ko nga dati, hindi ako tatagal sa UP at sooner or later, ma-kick-out ako. Basta first 2 semesters ko, waley.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">Hanggang sa isang araw, pagkatapos ng isang laboratory class, nagka-compare ang mga blockmates ko ng scores sa exam. Syempre hindi ako nagsasalita kasi ako ang lowest. Hindi ko maalala kung bakit nakita ng isa kong blockmate ang score ko. Itago na lang natin sya sa pangalang “Einstein”. Bigla ba naman sinabi na:</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">“Ang BOBO mo kasi!”</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">Hindi yun pabulong. Malakas, malutong at ang daming nakakarinig. May mga classmates pa ako na tumawa. Napahiya ako ng sobra. Sa loob loob ko, pareho lang naman tayong pumasa sa UP. Pareho tayo ng course. Ang pinagkaiba lang, lagi syang top sa exam. Mas kilala ang high school nya kesa sa school ko sa probinsya.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">Para akong nabuhusan ng kumukulong tubig. Sabi ko sa sarili ko, hindi pwede to. Hindi pwedeng ako ang talo at mas lalong hindi ako bobo. I have to change.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">Chem 40 is Organic Chemistry. Noong panahon ko, napakataas ng student mortality dahil mahirap sya. Maraming nagte-take 2. Isa sya sa subjects na kinuha ko on my second year and sa totoo lang kabado ako. Kailangan ko syang ipasa. I studied hard, I pushed myself further.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">Noong kuhanan ng grades, I got a flat 1.0! </div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">I can still remember singing worship songs while holding my classcard. May talino naman palang binigay si Lord sa akin, ako lang ang hindi kumikilos. Hindi ko ginagamit ng maayos.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">That was the start of big things. For every achievement, I pushed myself even further – I joined 5 student organizations, worked in #Wendy’s, became the lead role in several theater performances, was awarded Best Thesis by 5 institutions and the list went on and on.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">Katulad ng blockmate kong si “Einstein”, pareho kaming grumaduate na #CumLaude. Ang pinagkaiba lang namin, mas nauna ako. Natapos ko ang BS Biology major in Genetics ng 3.5 years lang.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">Ang lesson:</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">#Insults can either hurt you or change you. In my case, wrong words brought me to the right places. Kapag may masasakit kang naririnig sa iba, just be quiet, baka nga totoo. Kung hindi totoo, prove them wrong.</div><br/><div style="text-align: justify;">Let them break you for a while but heal fast and mend strong. <ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>UPLB student who penned critical open letter against Roxas says she’s been receiving death threats</strong></li><br/><li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>She scores those who’ve sent the death threats, says it proves country’s system needs drastic change</strong></li><br/><li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>She points out the irony, says the ones who sent the death threats are selfish and fearful </strong></li><br/></ul><p style="text-align: justify;">MANILA, Philippines – With the election campaign heating up even more on social media, a University of the Philippines Los Baños student and supporter of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte claims she has been receiving death threats ever since she posted an open letter on Facebook accusing and criticizing Liberal Party (LP) Mar Roxas of using underhanded tactics to win the upcoming elections.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">“The post I made was not meant to go viral. But the fact that some people are telling me to take it down or watch out for my life from now on is exactly why we have to fight for a change in the current system,” the student, identified as Rachel Amestoso, said.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">Directly addressing those who sent her the death threats, Amestoso pointed out the irony of them threatening her when they themselves are scared of Duterte’s rule. <ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Former UPLB professor penned an open letter to student who told Duterte to hurry with his answer</strong></li><br/><li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>He told the student he can fight for his cause without being disrespectful</strong></li><br/><li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>He hoped the student can change his attitude lest it becomes a big problem for him in the future</strong></li><br/></ul><p style="text-align: justify;">MANILA, Philippines – <em>You can fight for your cause without being rude.</em></p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">So summed up the open letter penned by former University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) professor Nol Montalbo to student Stephen Villena after the latter told Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to hurry up with his answer so he could go home during a forum.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">In his letter on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10153345406636231&set=a.10150431264146231.355791.529996230&type=3&theater">Facebook </a>which has since gone viral, Montalbo — who is also an alumnus and owner of the Mont Albo Massage Hut — told Villena there are many ways to advocate for something without being offensive or disrespectful especially to someone as accomplished and advanced in age as Duterte.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">“Stephen, there are many ways to fight for an issue. There are also many ways to ask a question such that it will not offend or embarrass the one you’re talking to,” he said in Filipino. “It’s not a student you’re talking to but a person who has proved so much and most of all, is older than you by decades.”</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">“I hope you change your attitude because when you finally work, you’ll be the type to gripe even if the problem is small, or if you’re talking to your supervisor and you don’t like his answer, you’ll embarrass him in front of other people,” he continued. “If you can do that to Duterte, how much more to other people? Your issue was education versus defense. You won’t die from it.”</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">Ending his post, Montalbo urged UP students and graduates never to forget honor and excellence. I was about to tell him you do not have be a smart aleck.”</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">Continuing, Duterte explained that the local government of Davao City does not supply the arms and equipment of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police. He also said he did not want to embarrass the student who asked the question.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">“We do not supply the arms of the Army, it’s the Armed Forces of the Philippines. They are just deployed in the city by the Armed Forces, by the contingencies of the moment. We have nothing to do with the army of anyone here… <em>Ayaw ko namang hiyain</em>,” he said.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">During the forum, the student repeatedly asked Duterte how he would increase the defense budget without slashing the education budget which he promised would receive a higher priority under his term. Rodrigo Duterte,” he said.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">According to Celestial, while he was indeed the one who asked Duterte the question on what concrete steps Duterte can take to fulfill his plan of eliminating crime and corruption in three to six months as he pledged because Filipinos are tired of hearing empty promises, he was not the one who told the mayor to hurry up with his answer so he can go home.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">“However, in a video report by Rappler, it seemed that I was the one who said the following: <em>‘Sir, sana pakisagot lang po nang diretso kasi nagtatanong po kami nang diretso dito para po makauwi na kayo,’</em>” he said.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">Slamming Rappler for the misleading video which has resulted in him receiving curses, hate messages and death threats, Celestial nonetheless apologized to anyone who felt slighted by the incident and hopes the public would focus on the bigger problems hounding the country.</p><br/><p style="text-align: justify;">“I would like to appeal to everyone to go beyond personal attacks and criticize the real problems that are plaguing our society. If in any way, I have offended anyone, my sincerest apologies. It was not and will never be our intention to disrespect anyone. I believe that forums with national leaders should be used as an avenue to get to know our candidates beyond what they are being portrayed in the mainstream media.
