A university professor in Indonesia was killed by a disturbed student after the two argued over the latter’s thesis.
Dr. Hj Nurain Lubis, a 57-year-old lecturer of the Faculty of Education in the North Sumatra Muhammadiyah University (UMSU), was attacked by her 21-year-old student Rormardo Sah Siregar in front of a bathroom in one of the buildings in the campus.
According to initial investigations, Dr. Lubis and Siregar were discussing the student’s thesis at the Guidance and Counseling department when the exchange between them became heated.
The professor then headed to the bathroom where Siregar attacked her; slashing her neck. Lubis was reported to have screamed before collapsing on the floor.
After attacking his professor, Siregar hid inside the bathroom as an angry mob formed outside. He was eventually taken outside by local police officers.
Meanwhile, Lubis was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment but her wounds proved to be fatal.
It is still unclear exactly why Siregar committed the killing.
The university administration declared a two-day period of mourning for the slain professor.
“The director and the entire academic community of UMSU expresses deep sorrow over this tragedy. As a form of grief, all the activities of lecturing and administration from campus will be suspended for two days to give time to mourning,” the UMSU announced in an official statement.
Students and colleagues mourned the death of Lubis, whom they say was a motherly figure on campus.
The family of the slain professor called for justice over her death.
“My family cannot believe something like this could happen. My sister was a good person, friendly and faithful. My family hopes the perpetrator will be punished by law, and given the harshest punishment,” the victim’s younger brother Muhammad Zein Lubis told Pojoksatu.
Investigations are still ongoing to establish a motive for the killing.
