LAKE OHRID, Macedonia – Photos showing a female tourist dragging a swan from a lake in Macedonia in order to pose for a selfie are drawing ire from the online community.
Sara Malm mentioned in her article for Mail Online published on March 7 that the woman, who is reportedly from Bulgaria, grabbed the unsuspecting swan by the wing and then dragged it onto the shoreline of Lake Ohrid, south-western Macedonia.
Local media reported that after the unidentified tourist had taken her selfie photos, she abandoned the swan. The animal later died on the beach of Lake Ohrid.
Witnesses were shocked to see what the tourist did; saying the swan initially did not react to the woman when she approached the animal, as swans are used to the presence of tourists visiting the town of Ohrid.
Photographs show the woman dressed in jeans and a black coat; grabbing the swan by the wing and dragging it out of the water.
An article by Macedonia Online published on March 6 said that despite the visibly distressed swan clearly fighting to be freed, the unidentified woman keeps smiling for the camera. Witnesses also said that the swan “remained motionless on the beach after the encounter.”
A few months ago, a rare baby dolphin died on the beach after a mob of tourists pulled it out from the ocean so they could take selfies with it.
An article by Kicker Daily published on February 19 said the video footage showing the body of the marine mammal lying motionless on the floor of Santa Teresita beach in Buenos Aires, Argentina while dozens of people surround it emerged online.
The Franciscana dolphin had been passed around among tourists as they all took out their phones and posed for selfie pictures.
