Former Miss World Philippines national director Cory Quirino shed some light on issues relevant to her position and the controversial politics that revolved around the loss of Catriona Gray.
The Philippine candidate to Miss World 2016 failed to bring home the crown in the competition that was held in America.
This was the first time that the 63-year old talked about her decision to drop her position as national director of the Philippine franchise of Miss World. PEP.ph caught up with her during an art exhibit of Natalya Bronzova in the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
“I kept my promise to the Filipino people that we will win the crown, in 2011, di ba sinabi ko ‘yon?” Quirino told PEP. She explained that she was just challenged to take on the big role of national director because of what happened back in 2011 when Gwendoline Ruais got third runner up in the contest, followed by a Top 7 finish by Queenie Rehman. Then when they finally won with Megan Young in 2013, she thought about how long was she going to play the role of national director.
During the more recent contest held last December 2016, she said she felt heartbroken when Catriona Gray lost because she felt that she deserved to win it all. “I felt really bad for her but she tried her best,” Quirino said. She also smiled when asked if the competition was rigged with politics and said that “With every pageant, you can never tell the outcome of the competition.”
When asked if Catriona could take the Bb. Pilipinas stage this 2017, she said “Catriona can join. We can release her if she asks our permission,” without hesitation.
“I feel she has a strong chance. She can do a Pia Wurtzbach.”
