7 people were reported to have died and more than 125 people were injured when a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Surigao City last Friday night, February 10.
The city is now under a state of calamity and officials are still trying to pinpoint the total damages caused by the earthquake. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake's epicenter was located 13 km east of Surigao City. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the earthquake struck the area at around 10:03 pm and its tremor hit at a depth of 4 km.
The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) through the Office of the Civil Defense identified six of the fatalities:
1.) Roberto Eludo, 40
2.) JM Ariar, 4
3.) Wilson Lito, 35
4.) Lorenzo Deguino, 85
5.) Roda Justina Taganahan, 83
6.) Wenefreda Aragon Bernal, 66
The earthquake also caused total power disruption in the municipalities of San Francisco and Malimono in Surigao del Norte and partial power outage in Surigao City. Water supply in the area is also affected. Victims have no supply of potable water. Fortunately, the Surigao City Metropolitan Water District already announced their action to address the situation. The earthquake also made Anao-aon Bridge in San Francisco municipality impassable for citizens.
Netizens were able to capture and share pictures of the post-earthquake devastation in the city.
The CDRRMC also ordered cancellation and suspension of classes in both private and public schools as well as offices.
"Classes and work, both in private and public [schools and establishments], are now cancelled per order by the vice chairperson of CDRRMC [City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council] and City Vice Mayor Alfonso Casurra effective immediately until further notice," Annette Villaces of Surigao City's Public Information Office announced.
