- A 22-year-old female passenger was allegedly raped by an Uber driver
- The suspect drives a red Toyota Vios with plate number ARA 3101
- Uber, however, does not disclose personal information regarding their drivers and operators as it invokes its privacy policy
Uber, one of the transport network vehicle services (TNVS) available in the country, has been regarded as a convenient and safe alternative to regular commuting so it came as a shock to commuters when a female passenger came forward and accused an Uber driver of sexually abusing her.
According to the police report filed in the Quezon City Police District, the suspect, identified only as Xstian Karlou John Marie as mentioned in an article published by Philippine Star, who drives a red Toyota Vios with plate number ARA 3101 picked up the passenger in Camp Crame.
At around 2:30 PM, somewhere along Katipunan Avenue, Marie suddenly embraced the victim and forced her to hold his genitals. The suspect also allegedly forced the victim to perform oral sex, but she managed to break free, as per an article published by Inquirer.
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has summoned officials of Uber System Inc. to a hearing on August 10, and to cooperate in providing details about the suspect.
However, LTFRB noted that Uber “doesn’t give the real identity of their ‘peers’ or driver/operator” as it invokes its privacy policy.
“It has come to our attention that Uber does not disclose the name of the driver or any of its details to their passenger. When a crime is committed, it would be very hard for the victim to file a case because no detail with regard to the perpetrator is provided,” said board member Ariel Inton.
The company expressed their cooperation in the resolution of the complaint through a statement: “First and foremost our thoughts are with the rider and her family. We immediately removed the driver from the Uber platform when we learned of the reported incident and are cooperating fully with law enforcement in their ongoing investigation and stand ready to assist them in every way we can.”
