Authorities shot and killed two policemen who went on an absent without leave (AWOL) during an anti-drug operation in Sampaloc, Manila.
The AWOL cops were identified as Antonio Capule and PO3 Nikolino Quiambao. The Manila Police District (MPD) did not identify which station the slain AWOL cops were previously assigned.
Two other civilian companions of Quiambao, Brian Oliveros and a man who goes under the alias “Barik”, were also killed during the buy-bust operation.
Capule has been under surveillance for a long time due to his alleged involvement in drug pushing in the area, according to District Anti-Illegal Drugs (DAID) section under the MPD. Police caught him in the act of selling illegal drugs in the house he was renting in Sampaloc.
GMA News previously reported that local authorities were also able to recover from Capule’s house eight sachets of what was identified as shabu, a .38-caliber revolver with two live ammunition, and four empty shells.
The suspects were killed when they engaged in a gunfight with the arresting officers.
Meanwhile, authorities pointed out that Capule was involved in peddling illegal drugs together with another rogue cop Rodolfo Santos who had already been arrested earlier by the MPD.
According to Bombo Radyo Philippines, since President Rodrigo Duterte took office in June 30, there had been at least 611 suspects killed while an unprecedented 130,014 drug users have surrendered and an additional 4,000 individuals arrested under the intensified anti-drug operations of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
