- Mar Roxas said the May 9 presidential elections is a choice between democracy and dictatorship
- He made the statement after reports that the INC endorsed Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Senator Bongbong Marcos for president and vice president, respectively
- A vote for Duterte and Marcos is a virtual vote for the death of democracy, Roxas said
Liberal Party standard bearer Mar Roxas said on Thursday, May 5, that the electorate will choose between dictatorship and democracy on the May 9 elections.
Roxas said he and running mate Congresswoman Leni Robredo are the leaders for democracy while Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who are both front runners in the presidential and vice presidential races, respectively, are leaders who want to bring back Martial Law.
Roxas made the statement following reports that Duterte and Marcos won the backing of the influential Iglesia ni Cristo (INC), which is known for its practice of bloc-voting. The INC’s bloc vote is expected to generate at least 1.7 million votes for their chosen candidates.
[It’s crystal clear – Roxas-Robredo for democracy, for clean and transparent governance or Duterte-Marcos for return to Martial Law, return to violence, back to where they think they are always right and the only ones who control the funds of the country. That’s the choice our countrymen are faced with on Monday]
Roxas likened Duterte to the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos Sr., Bongbong Marcos’s father and namesake.
Like Marcos, Roxas said Duterte will rule with iron hands.
“He’s the only who would make the decision for the entire country. If you try to oppose him, he will hurl invectives at you, insult you, threaten you,” he said.
He said a vote for Duterte and Marcos is a virtual vote for the death of democracy.
“It only means that we will again experience martial law,” Roxas said.
