• Duterte said he will not use the number 1 protocol license plate for his presidential vehicle
• He said he finds the protocol license plates corny
• He also said members of his Cabinet will not use official car license plates
Presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte said he and members of his Cabinet will not be using low-numbered license plates on their respective cars.
The incoming president said he finds using protocol car license plates corny.
“Yung plaka ng presidente, itapon ko ‘yan. “Masyadong corny ‘yan, number 1, number 1 na plaka,” he told journalists during the press conference that started late night Wednesday and ended early Thursday morning, May 26, held at the Royal Mandaya Hotel in Davao City.
[The (protocol license) plate of the president, I’ll get rid of it. That’s so corny…the number 1 plate]
He also said that members of his Cabinet will not use official plates.
“Tsaka yang cabinet members, no more (official plates) also,” the 71-year-old incoming president said.
As per Executive Order No. 400 signed by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Cabinet Secretaries are assigned protocol license plate number 6.
According to a GMA News Online article dated May 26, 2016, Duterte cited his grandson who lives in Paoay, Ilocos Norte as the reason why he will not use the No. 1 protocol license plate for his presidential vehicle.
“I have a grandson, Ilokano from Paoay, and he would tell you, ‘gusto ng lolo ko mag-hambel (humble) na lang tayo [my grandfather wants us to be humble]’,” Duterte told reporters.
Duterte, however, will not stop other officials of the country like senators, congressmen and those in the judiciary, who are all entitled to use protocol license plates, from using theirs.
