It’s a dream come true for Rita Gabiola, the 13-year-old viral “Badjao Girl”, as she has received a scholarship from Rated K and Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation.
In an article posted on ABS-CBN, it was diclosed that “Badjao Girl”, who caught the hearts of people online after her photo went viral, is now a step closer to her dream of becoming a teacher.
The local government of Lucena City also pledged to provide her family with a job.
Gabriola was spotted along the streets of Lucban, Quezon. She was seen wandering around streets while asking for alms in order to feed her family. Topher Quinto, a professional photographer, was captivated by the physical features of the young woman. He took photos of her as she continues to beg for food or money from any stranger along her way.
Hopes
Earlier, “Badjao girl” who went viral said she hopes that fame will help her and her family climb out of poverty.
“Masaya lang po ako at nagpapasalamat ako kay Kuya Topher, ako po ang napili niya. Kaya sobra-sobrang pasasalamat ko sa kanya [I am happy and thankful to Kuya Topher for choosing me as his subject. I am really grateful for what he has done],” she said.
Moreoever, she noted that she wants to be a teacher to help her family.
“Kaya ko po gustong maging guro, gusto ko pong matulungan ang tulad ng mga kapatid kong bata. Gusto ko rin po sila maipag-aral. At sabi sakin ng tatay ko, gusto niya kong mapag-aral. Kasi kami na lang po ang pag-asa naming magkakapatid [I want to be a teacher because I want to help children, like my younger siblings. I want them to be educated. And my father also told me that that he wants me to go to school because education is our only hope],” she shared.
