- President-elect Rodrigo Duterte will be fulfilling his promise of allowing the hero’s burial for the late former president Ferdinand Marcos
- He said Marcos should be buried at the heroes’ cemetery because he had served as a soldier
- While the Marcos family is grateful, Duterte’s stance remain unpopular to various groups
Presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte said he will allow the burial of the late former president Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani.
Duterte said Marcos should be buried at the cemetery because he had served as a soldier.
“I will allow Marcos burial in Libingan Ng Mga Bayani, not because he was a hero but because he was a Filipino soldier,” said Duterte.
Since the dictator’s death in 1989, Marcos’ burial at the heroes’ cemetery had been strongly opposed because of the human rights violations committed by the late president and his cronies during the Martial Law era.
Duterte believes that finally allowing Marcos’ burial at the heroes’ cemetery would initiate healing and unify the Filipino people, according to an article published by Rappler.
“It has long created a division among our people. Almost all Ilocanos are hurting because of it,” said Duterte, “I am sure it would erase from our people one hatred.”
When asked about the victims of human rights violation, he said monetary compensation will be provided and is already available.
Senator Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos, Jr. expressed his gratitude to Duterte for granting the Marcos family’s long-standing wish.
“We are deeply grateful to the statement of our incoming President Rodrigo Duterte favoring the burial of the late President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani,” said Marcos, “It has always been our family’s position that it is our father’s right under the law to be buried there being a soldier and a former President of this country.”
Campaign against the Return of the Marcoses to Malacañang (CARMMA), a group who opposed Marcos’ vice presidential bid, said the late dictator does not deserve a hero’s burial.
“We ask President-elect Duterte to reconsider. Ferdinand Marcos cannot be considered a hero,” CARMMA convenor Bonifacio Ilagan told GMA News Online.
” It will whitewash all crimes he committed against the people and will send the wrong message to the world that in the Philippines, crime pays,” said Ilagan who is also a torture victim during Martial Law.
