- Children featured in senator’s newest commercial against mayor
- Duterte’s ‘bloody presidency’ promise, rape remarks, Pope Francis joke, and leftist links all hit in ad
- Mayor’s supporters outraged at ad, ABS-CBN, GMA News and TV5 blasted for showing it
MANILA, Philippines – Presidential bet Rodrigo Duterte’s supporters are fuming over Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV’s latest ad featuring children denouncing the Davao City mayor’s controversial remarks.
The 30-second ad, which went first up on Thursday evening, May 5, showed several children questioning whether Duterte is fit to become the country’s president due to his no-holds-barred statements.
Clips of the mayor’s promise to kill criminals and establish a ‘bloody presidency’, his cursing of Pope Francis, praising the New People Army’s (NPA), kissing a woman and his rape remark involving slain Australian missionary Jacqueline Hamill were all shown in the ad.
“Ito po bang gusto nyong maging halimbawa para sa amin [Is this the man you want to set an example for us]?” a young girl asks just as the ad ends with a censored clip of Duterte giving the middle finger.
Biased, Too Much
As expected, the ad did not sit well with the mayor’s supporters, many of whom blasted ABS-CBN for allowing it to be released.
The TV station was also accused of being biased against the mayor although some social media users later pointed out that GMA News and TV5 also showed the ad.
A good number also questioned the use of children in the commercial and called on the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and other relevant government agencies to investigate whether the ad violated child labor laws.
Still others downplayed the ad as a last-minute black propaganda operation by the ruling Liberal Party (LP) to derail Duterte’s rise and save the lagging bid of Mar Roxas.
