Presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte revealed on Thursday, May 26, during a press conference in Davao City that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called to congratulate him.
Duterte said Trudeau’s call, which was made on Tuesday, May 24, at around 3:30 p.m., lasted 9 minutes.
Describing their conversation as a “civil one,” the incoming president said he and Trudeau talked about the Canadian hostage of the Abu Sayyaf and other concerns.
Duterte, according to Philstar’s Patricia Lourdes Viray, said Trudeau brought up the issue of adherence to the provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Asked what he told the Canadian leader, Duterte, quoting himself, said: “I’m following it. I said we are partners; we remain to be partners for all time.”
Duterte, who will be sworn to office on June 30, said he commended Trudeau for protecting Filipinos in Canada through their labor laws.
“I’m aware there are Filipinos, a lot are working there, some are immigrants and I’m happy they have found protection in your labor laws,” he said.
On his part, the Canadian Prime Minister said Canada considers Filipinos as its citizens.
Duterte said Trudeau was the second head of state to call him. United States President Barack Obama was the first to call and congratulate him on his victory.
