• Duterte announced his top 3 picks for PNP Chief
• The candidates are Chief Supt. Ronald de la Rosa, Chief Supt. Ramon Apolinario and Sr. Supt. Rene Aspera
• The 3 officers all served as Davao City police chief
Presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte announced his top three choices to head the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Sunday, May 15.
The 3 top candidates for PNP chief, who all served as Davao City police chief, are Chief Superintendent Ronald de la Rosa, head of the PNP Reactionary Standby Support Force; Chief Superintendent Ramon Apolinario, Mimaropa police officer-in-charge; and Sr. Supt. Rene Aspera, chief of staff of the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group.
Rappler’s Pia Ranada, in her May 16, 2016 article, noted that Duterte spoke highly of the three police officers based on their performance during their stints as Davao City police chiefs.
“I cannot say anything against their tenure here. It was all good,” Duterte said.
Duterte added that the 3 candidates would have to “discuss among themselves” who would get the post since all of them are fit to be the next PNP Chief.
GMA News Online’s Tricia Macas said the three police commanders continued their discussion after meeting with Duterte. When interviewed, the three officers gave no categorical answer when asked who would be the next PNP Chief among them.
However, De la Rosa said he would be ready to take on the challenge of the presumptive president to suppress crime in six months.
According to Journal Online’s sources, De la Rosa is Duterte’s top pick to become his first PNP Chief.
As mentioned in the May 13, 2016 article published by Journal Online, De la Rosa was the Davao City Police Station chief who partnered with Duterte in crushing criminality in the area. He is known to have led countless major anti-crime operations in the city in support of Duterte including a number of gun battles that left heavily-armed kidnappers, robbers and drug traffickers dead.
