MANILA, Philippines – A fitting choice.
Even as the other presidential candidates have settled on their campaign colors of choice, the camp of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte bared his plan to use the Philippine flag as his campaign symbol in order to rally the Filipino people.
According to PDP-Laban spokesperson Atty. Paola Alvarez, the mayor said he wants the flags to be displayed in his campaign sorties as it perfectly fits with his call for Filipinos to be united amid their differences.
“This is only fitting as the tricolor represents the unity and aspirations of the Filipino people,” she told the Manila Bulletin. “We believe the flag should be the symbol of national unity even as we Filipinos come from different ethnic, social and cultural backgrounds, speak different languages, and hold different religious beliefs.”
“As the Philippine flag has evolved through arduous struggle against foreign rule and our people’s yearning for independence and freedom, we should display it proudly,” she added.
Popular in Davao City due to his tough stance on crime and no-nonsense style of governance, Duterte — a socialist who leans to the Left but does not support their armed struggle — is known to be respected by communists and Moro rebels.
A student of Communist Party of the Philippines founder Joma Sison, Duterte remains friends with his teacher and also with Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) chairman Nur Misuari. He also recently visited several ranking Moro Islamic Liberation Front officials in their headquarters in Sultan Kudarat to discuss with them his plan to set up a federal system in the country.
Due to his relations, many have seen Duterte as an unprecedented unifying candidate who could finally bring peace especially in the war-torn South.
