- Man bitten by King Cobra in Kidapawan City in comatose condition
- The 8-foot-long King Cobra also known among locals as ‘banakon’ attacked Bonifacio Digao while resting
- This is the first recorded attack of King Cobra this year
KIDAPAWAN CITY – A 62-year-old man has been fighting for his life since Monday after he was bitten by a snake alleged as King Cobra.
William Magbanua of Inquirer Mindanao said the victim was taking a nap in his shanty in Barangay (village) Sumbac when the cobra attacked him.
City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) chief, Psalmer Bernalte, has identified the victim as Bonifacio Digao.
The CDRRMC chief said the 8-foot-long King Cobra also known among locals as “banakon” which has inflicted harm on Digao was later killed by the victim’s neighbors.
Mayor Joseph Evangelista disclosed that the victim is now in comatose condition due to the venom from the cobra and is in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital where he was brought for treatment.
The Inquirer report said that it is the first King Cobra attack recorded in the city this year. In Cotabato, a 63-year-old woman also died recently after she was attacked by a snake in Barangay Kisante in Makilala, North Cotabato.
Towards this end, Evangelista has called on residents of the city, especially those whose residences are situated near the rubber plantations, to take extra care against King Cobras and other snake species.
The city mayor said that the extreme heat has been causing snakes to come out from their lairs to go to colder areas as he noted that the temperature is always colder in rubber plantation areas.
Evangelista has also ordered the City Veterinary Office and the Public Safety Office to purchase anti-venom vaccines to enable them to provide immediate treatment to victims of snake bites.
