Labrador saves his owner from certain death after falling into deep puddle of mud

PERRY LAKE, Kansas— If you needed any more proof that dogs are truly man’s best friend, then read this daring and inspiring story of a certain chocolate Labrador. This dog was hailed as the town hero in Perry Lake after saving two men from certain death! Meet Otis, the one-year-old chocolate labrador of Jake Atkins who displayed exemplary bravery during a crisis.

Jake Atkins and his friend went along on a duck-hunting excursion with his faithful Labrador, Otis. However, the supposed-to-be-memorable adventure turned into a nightmare when Jake and his friend accidentally fell knee deep into a deep puddle of mud.

In a report published by KC TV, Jake recalled the horrific incident:

“We were walking pretty much side-by-side, and we both sank to knee depth in the mud and we tried to wiggle ourselves out and it ended up being waist deep.”

The friends were quick to call 911, but Jake had a sinking feeling that they would be dead by the time rescue came. In order to delay the inevitable, Jake and his friend remained motionless while slowly sinking into the bottom of the deep puddle.

Soon enough, firefighters and rescuers arrived at the scene. Their presence should have given Jake a sigh of relief, but another problem arose. How can the firefighters get them off the mud without sinking themselves?

Right when all hope seems lost, a light at the end of the tunnel presented itself with the form of his faithful Labrador, Otis. Jake was quoted as saying:

“If they’d walked out, they would’ve sunk too. So there was no way for them to get the rope to us. So when those firefighters popped out of the bushes, I said just tie the rope onto Otis.”

Using Otis, the firefighters were able to bring the needed equipment to and fro. Otis was the only one light enough to walk in the mud without sinking. After a tense rescue, Otis and the firefighters succeeded in pulling the two men out of the mud!

Even though the ordeal was over, Otis made sure his owner was safe and sound. Even after being pulled out, the Labrador walked alongside him until he made sure he was safe. Jake narrated:

“He followed me as they were pulling me. He kind of just was walking right beside me as they were pulling me in on my back. It was kind of funny.”

To award Otis’ display of bravery, Jake treated his pet dog to a well-deserved steak. Good boy, Otis!
