Yellow-crested cockatoos are one of the most endangered species in the world. They breed slowly and lay eggs only once a year. This kind of bird is normally bought and sold on the black market just to become a pet, despite being close to extinction.
These birds cost as much as £650 and are typically hunted and traded for profit. Unfortunately, because of deforestation and poaching, estimates say that there are less than 7,000 cockatoos remaining in the world.
In Indonesia, customs agents heard rustling sounds inside plastic bottles at the Port of Tanjung Perak in Surabaya. They found 24 yellow-crested cockatoos in critical conditions crammed inside so they could get through customs.
People should know that 40% of birds being illegally smuggled die in the process.
Netizens were very shocked about what the authorities have discovered.
