As soon as the 65th Miss Universe coronation night ended, former Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach and Miss Philippines Maxine Medina were captured on cam hugging each other. The photo depicting solidarity between the two beauty queens immediately went viral.
According to the photo's sources - Jonas Gaffud and Richard Juan - and a report from ABS-CBN, Pia took the initiative to look for Maxine on stage to give her comforting remarks after she failed to score a back-to-back win for the country.
What were the exact words Pia used to comfort Maxine in her time of distress?
"Sabi ko sa kanya, 'Mars, ang maganda dito, walang kakalat na video sa YouTube na nagkamali ka sa Q and A', kasi yun yung pinaka-inaalala niya," Pia said, according to ABS-CBN.
The beauty queen told Maxine that she answered the question correctly and so there is no reason for her to be worried about bashers.
Maxine was in the midst of numerous controversies due to her issues with the English language.
"She wasn't crying, she was actually okay... She was really worried about making everybody proud." Pia added.
Since Filipinos were hoping for a back-to-back Miss Universe victory, it put Maxine under a lot of pressure. Hence, her trainer, Jonas Gaffud concluded that her home court advantage did not work out for her. He said that Maxine would have been more confident if the pageant was not held in the Philippines.
"Ang sabi ni Maxine sa akin after, kung hindi lang sa Pilipinas (nangyari ang Miss Universe), mas kaya niya sigurong lumaban. Nahirapan talaga siya sa pressure," Gaffud said in an interview with ABS-CBN's Kat Domingo.
Gaffud also added that the Filipino people's high expectations of Maxine affected her performance greatly. He said that she experienced a lot of pressure from the Filipino crowd.
