- Maintenance workers find body of a woman in an elevator
- The woman has been trapped for a month after the power supply was improperly shut off
- The case has been classified as a negligent homicide
XI’AN, China – A 43-year-old woman died after being trapped in an elevator of a residential building because the maintenance workers improperly shut off the power supply while visiting to repair a fault.
According to an article published by Shanghaiist, before turning off the power supply, the workers shouted to check if anyone was inside the elevator but they failed to physically open the doors.
The elevator cab was returned to the first floor and taken out of service since January 3o.
The repair work was then delayed by the Chinese New Year holiday and the workers were not able to return until March 1.
One of the residents said that according to the paramedics when they found the body her hand had already begun to deform.
“There were markings all over the inside of the elevator, it’s just too horrible,” she added.
Another resident said the victim probably starved to death inside the elevator.
According to an article published by Los Angeles Times, the victim’s hands were mangled; probably due to her attempts to pry open the cab doors.
Police investigators found no evidence of trauma. The case has been classified as a negligent homicide, and at least, one “responsible person” has been detained in connection with the investigation.
The incident revived memories of a tragic escalator death last July which was also related to maintenance issues.
In a department store in Jingzhou, a Chinese mom pushed her kid to safety just before falling to her death,
A footage from a security camera showed a panel on the floor giving way as the mother stepped off the escalator. While she was falling half-way through, she managed to push her child forward, where a nearby shop assistant pulled the boy to safety.
