- The Pentagon confirms Omar the Chechen’s death
- The United Kingdom-based Syrian Observatory for human Rights says Omar the Chechen was “clinically dead” for several days
- Unable to breathe on his own, the red-bearded militant is being kept alive by a respirator
United States officials has confirmed that the ISIS top commander Omar Al-Shishani, known as Omar the Chechen, has died from injuries he sustained from the March 4 airstrike in Syria.
Al-Shishani, whose birth name is Tarkhan Tayumurazovich Batirashvili, was among the 13 ISIS members who were targeted in the air strikes near the Al-Shadadi town in northeastern Syria. It was reported that 12 of the militants died instantly, but one of them managed to limp away. It was later determined that the militant who initially survived the air attack was Al-Shishani.
On Monday, March 15, the Pentagon confirmed the death of Al-Shishani.
Navy Captain Jeff Davis, Pentagon spokesman, said “Omar the Chechen” died after suffering injuries in a U.S.-led air attack.
“We believe he subsequently died of his injuries,” Capt. Davis said.
On Sunday, March 13, the United Kingdom-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told AFP that Al-Shishani has been “clinically dead” for several days. Unable to breathe on his own, the militant is being kept alive by respirator.
The red-bearded ISIS commander, who was born in 1986 in a predominantly Chechen area of Georgia, was one of the most wanted terrorists in the world and the United States’ Reward for Justice Program offered a $ 5-mllion bounty for information leading to his capture.
Wills Robinson of the Daily Mail said Omar the Chechen was believed to be the one who recruited Jihadi John to the Islamic State.
Omar the Chechen was reportedly very close to ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi even though he was not a member of the political elite controlling the terror group. He was one of the reclusive Islamic State leader’s military advisers.
