Manila-born Top Chef winner Paul Qui, now based in Austin, Texas, has recently been arrested by authorities for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.
An article written by Ross McDonagh which was published on the Daily Mail disclosed that the Austin restaurateur was charged after police were called to his apartment to find his girlfriend, identified as Stephanie Rodriguez, in tears and him covered in blood.
Allegedly, the incident was sparked when Qui’s friends propositioned Rodriguez for group sex.
In the arrest affidavit it was reportedly noted that officers arrived after receiving a call from one of Qui’s friends who reported that the couple were having a fight.
According to the police, the apartment was in disarray with smashed glass and furniture, and blood smeared on the walls and floor.
Purportedly, they found Rodriguez inside the apartment, holding a child and crying.
Aside from this, it was noted by one of the police that Rodriguez has a fresh cut on her right forearm and bruising on her upper arms. Her right jaw was also slightly puffy and swollen.
Rodriguez then told police that Qui was ‘very controlling and extremely jealous’.
Based on her statement, she said she had been asleep with her son when Qui returned home with a group of friends, and allegedly began taking drugs and alcohol.
Qui asked her to join them and she obliged. But when he got intoxicated he began accusing his friends of flirting with her and kicked them all out.
The chef then flew into a rage and hit her.
In an attempt to save herself, Rodriguez grabbed some of her things and tried to leave with her son, but Qui purportedly blocked her way and prevented her from leaving the apartment.
Meanwhile, Qui admitted that he did not let Rodriguez leave because ‘he wanted the police to come and see all the damage in the apartment’ as he further stated that he ‘wanted to be able to tell his side of the story’.
In the end, the chef was charged with unlawful restraint, and assault causing physical injury to a family member.
An amount of $ 20,000 bond was posted by Qui and was released later that day.
