There’s nothing new about seeing siblings get on each other’s nerves. Children are always competing about one thing or another – their parents’ attention, their sibling’s toys, food, and which cartoon to watch in the morning, among other things. This is why a mother feels intense and unparalleled joy whenever she sees her children sharing priceless and tender moments with one another. Take for instance the story of this three-year-old who was caught by his mother whispering sweet encouragements to his baby brother diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Four-month-old Thomas Blanksby and his three-year-old brother, William Blanksby, were spending some quality time together when they got suspiciously quiet.
Their mother, Sheryl Blanksby, knew very well what silence means when you’re living with children. She quietly trooped to the lounge, camera in hand, ready to capture the mess that the two boys had supposedly made. Sheryl expected the younger one to be covered in Nutella, thanks to the artistic skills of his elder brother.
But nothing could have prepared Sheryl’s heart for what she heard upon getting close to the two.
“My preschooler is telling his baby brother “Kuya (big brother) is here. Everything is ok”.”
Apparently, being young didn’t stop William from understanding just what having terminal cancer meant for his baby brother. He wanted to reassure his younger sibling that whatever comes next, Thomas will not be facing it alone.
This moment meant everything for Sheryl and her husband Jon, who just wished to spend whatever time they had left with Thomas the best they can, before the terminal cancer claims his life.
Sheryl, in an interview with Mail Online Australia said:
“There are tears and that immense pain of losing someone you love so much. We film him constantly and stare at him and kiss him. We as a family are trying to cope the best way we can, but it has been very hard.”
Unfortunately, Baby Thomas Blanksby lost his battle with terminal cancer at the tender age of five months. William, who had been his baby brother’s ever-dependable shield, now struggles to understand the unbearable loss. Just as Sheryl captured the wonderful moment of William encouraging baby Thomas, she again captured this heartbreaking moment of William’s poignant scuffle with the idea of losing his brother.
In a short clip posted on Instagram, William was recorded saying, “Thomas is going to miss me,” before asking, “When it’s raining, will he come back?”
Sheryl didn’t know how to comfort the inconsolable. She replied that the rain might be Thomas “saying hello” and stated: “I am sure he misses you too darling boy.”
Thomas passed away on the 8th of May, 2017 at 7:30 in the evening.
