What truly defines a home? Is it no longer considered a home if it lacks four walls, a stable foundation, and comfortable furniture? This old Colombian couple will give you a new perspective on what makes a home. They’ll teach you how to make any place a home, as long as you’ve got the heart – and the stomach – for it. For 22 years, they have been living with their dog in an abandoned sewer.
When darkness starts to creep, the streets are one of the places most people avoid, especially in Medellin. But for this elderly Colombian couple, the streets are home. When night comes, they slowly descend to their humble home – a sewer! Yes, you heard that right.
For more than two decades, this couple and their dog have been living in an abandoned sewer under the streets of Medellin.

Living in a sewer might sound unbearable, but the couple have managed to make it homely. A former drug addict named Miguel Restrepo, his wife Maria Garcia, and their dog Blackie have spent years making this abandoned sewer habitable. In the end, their efforts paid off.

Although measuring only 2 meters deep by 1.4 meters high, the cramped space is just enough for its three inhabitants. It may be small but don’t underestimate its efficiency! Who would have thought that a narrow space like this could hold so much?
To enter their home, one must descend into small hole located right in the middle of the street.

The abandoned sewer started to look and feel more like home when the couple installed a stove, an electric fan, and a bed. The small bed fits the couple snugly while Blackie rests on the floor. The small space also has an entertainment set in the form of a small television.

Above their bed, their things are held by planks of wood propped up against the wall. As if that’s not amazing enough, they even have enough space to put up decorations!

Unfortunately, since they live in the streets and are technically homeless, there’s a chance that the elderly couple could be evicted from their home if the Colombian government decides to take the sewer back.
