A school in Pasir Hitam Island, Perak, Malaysia, has one student who gets all the attention as he is the only student enrolled in SJK (C) Aik Hwa.
Onn Sheng Juin is the only student enrolled for the year 2016 due to urban migration.
After being flocked by reporters during his first day in school all by himself, the kid burst into tears. However, the school’s administrators claim that his day still went well and he was just spooked by the journalists.
The young boy's teachers have praised him for his ability to learn quickly, perhaps aided by the undivided attention he received from his teachers.
"He only attended kindergarten in Penang for several months before coming here. He can’t write well but is picking it up well," says 35-year-old teacher Tan Boon Lin.
"He is still adapting to the new environment and keeps to himself and hasn’t fully opened up," Lin added.
Juin recently moved into his grandmother's home in the small fishing village of Pasir, Hitam, Trong along with his sister, according to the Strait Times. The little village was said to only have a population of around 50 people.
"We thought the school would be close because lack of pupils. But then Sheng Juin came in," said the school's 51-year-old head mistress Hee Kam Foong.
"We have also obtained a letter from the district Education Department to continue the classes," she said. "The villagers also hoped the school could remain opened. One of them (villagers) said he will register with the school once his child is old enough."
In the hopes of sustaining the school’s operation, philanthropist Tan Sri promised to sponsor three other students to study there as well. An allowance of RM 500 would be given to parents who decide to send their children to SJK (C) Aik Hwa.
