Many choose the path where a lot has gone, but few choose the noble and less traveled road.
For firefighters, it is not just about the money. A recent fire in Quezon City once again showcased their bravery and dedication to their jobs.
Just this Monday, fire struck the homes of those who live in Franchesca Tower in Quezon City, putting the lives of many in danger.
Several people were rescued, including an infant and the mother who had to walk a steel plank made by the firemen for them to walk on just outside her window.
The firemen inspired many people through their heroic deeds, as news spread around social media about one of them who gave up his breathing apparatus to a one–year old boy, among several others that he and his team rescued.
FO2 Florencio Asonza was awarded by Fire Chief Superintendent Bobby Baruelo with the Medalya ng Katapangan or Medal of Bravery for this, as he laid in his hospital bed after he suffered carbon-monoxide poisoning after he selflessly let the child use his breathing apparatus amid the thick smoke of the fire.
According to the Hospital Director, Dr. Modesto Llamas, Asonza’s heart was damaged. He is now being treated at the Chinese General Hospital.
The other firemen who received the Medal of Bravery were Bernardo Soriano, SFO1 Ernesto Belecario, FO1 Christopher Gaor, FO3 Bill Astudillo, and SF01 Carmelo Eugenio.
According to the BFP, the fire broke out in the basement of the condominium building. Thick smoke went through the garbage chute affecting tenants up to the 11th floor of the building.
Fire out was declared at 7:44 p.m. The BFP has yet to determine the cause of the fire.
