Recently, a video of President Duterte explaining why he had been rude and putting up a tough stance against the United States of America went viral.
According to him, Americans take advantage of the financial aid they were giving the Philippines to treat us like we were under their control and order us around. He also noted how agreements between the two countries favor the US more than the Philippines.
The US has yet to issue any statement regarding any of Duterte’s pronouncements. There were no talks about withdrawing their aid, either. In fact, the US was very active in supporting the distribution of relief goods to super typhoon Lawin’s affected areas in Northern Philippines.
The 3-year $ 2-million partnership between United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance, the Government of the Philippines, and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), which began in 2013, is still ongoing. The agreement enabled the transport of about 745 metric tons (745,000 kilograms) of relief items to the affected communities.
Not all of Duterte’s supporters agree with his attitude towards the United States.
Netizen Elgin Castillo Lazaro III shared the article about the US’ aid and captioned it with “AYAW NG IBALITA ITO NG MGA IPOKRITONG KA-DDS (COLORFUL GUYS) UMAAYAW SA AMERIKA, KASI AYAW NI DIGONG SA AMERIKA. DESPITES, NARITO PA RIN SILA AT KAHIT PINAGTATABUYAN NI DUTERTE, TUMULONG PA RIN SILA.
ANG PAGMAMALAKI PA NILA “HOY DI KAMI MAGUGUTOM KUNG WALA KAYO!, DI KAMI PATAY-GUTOM.”
