“Move on”; this was the response of Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo’s camp for recent vice presidential candidate and former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
The Vice President’s camp issued this comment on Thursday after Marcos’ camp made a move to elevate a dismissed criminal complaint against election officials to the Department of Justice. Marcos’ camp asked the DOJ to review the decision of the Manila Prosecutor’s Office to dismiss the case over the script change in the server during the May polls
The cybercrime charges were filed by Abakada Partylist Rep. Jonathan dela Cruz, who served as Marco’s campaign adviser. These charges were against several employees of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), along with two executives and a personnel of technology provider Smartmatic.
Lawyer Bernadette Sardillo, part of Robredo’s legal team, issued in a statement that the complaint against the officials of Comelec and Smartmatic were dismissed precisely because of insufficient evidence.
“While the right to litigate is accorded to any person, fair play demands that we guard against false or baseless charges,” Sardillo said.
She further added, “If their evidence is lacking, it should be declared to be so and no amount of appeal can change that,”
Marco’s camp blames Robredo’s narrow victory – around 263,473 votes – on a script change which rendered the display of the letter “ñ” as question marks in candidates’ names.
