TAMIL NADU, India – A video, showing the moment a two-year-old elephant desperately tries to wake up his dead mother, is making rounds online and breaking the hearts of some readers.
Gareth Davies mentioned in his article for Mail Online that the mother elephant and her son were walking near Kavadiammal temple in Pallam, in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India, when she suddenly collapsed.
The mother died immediately after collapsing; however, the son repeatedly prodded his mother with his hooves, rubbed her with his trunk and chased away anyone who attempts to come near her; in what seems to be a desperate attempt to resuscitate the dead mother.
The baby elephant tried everything, even brushing the mother with branches, flips her ears with his tusk and even takes to lying across the side of her collapsed body. However, despite all efforts, the mother stayed lifeless on the ground.
An article by The Times of India said that the forest department of the area tried to take the baby away from its mother. However, the baby refused to leave.
The cause of death of the mother was confirmed to be internal bleeding, but the reason for bleeding is unknown.
Online users shared their sorrow upon seeing the plight of the baby elephant.
An anonymous online user said, “If Asian, African elephant poaching cannot be stopped. Future generation People around the world Can see elephants via Photos zoos and Statues, Even though this elephant died naturally the Baby show his mom Affection is general to all living beings in Mother Earth?”
“Animals are more ‘human’, than ‘humans’. Sorry, little elephant, the ‘inhuman’ could not save your mom,” said online user SB.
Another online user said, “The mother looks skin and bone, no wonder she died. Elephants are well known to be very family minded, they will go to any lengths for a member of their herd.”
“Why was(sic) this mother and baby on their own and not with the rest of the herd, maybe she was sick (hence the weight loss) and she couldn’t keep up with the rest of the herd. Sad. Dreadful to think these animals are hunted,” the online user added.
