NEW YORK, USA – Harry Potter fans are once again back in full support even as nine years have passed since the publication of the seventh and last book of the best-selling boy wizard series. Amazingly, pre-orders for the script of the “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” hit an astounding number.
Elysa Gardner mentioned in her article for USA Today that retail book seller Barnes & Noble said on Monday that the script of the sold-out London play is now the most pre-ordered book since 2007 in the United States.
Barnes and Noble said in a statement that “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is the U.S. company’s most pre-ordered book now, and replaced the 2007’s Harry Potter series’ final book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”.
Although Barnes and Noble didn’t give sales figures, it is expected to be the biggest seller of 2016, and numerous midnight parties are planned in stores on Saturday night to celebrate it.
“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”, the eighth story in the Harry Potter series, will be published at the midnight of July 31, a day after the official opening of the London stage production of the same name. The eighth story in the series will be published as a stage play script rather than the usual narrative novel.
The play, which is based on an idea by British author J.K. Rowling, tells the story of a grown-up Potter, 19 years after “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” In the play, Harry was portrayed as an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic and father of three children who is grappling with his past.
Amazon Books said the new book is already its top pre-order book in print in the US and also a top in Kindle as an e-book of 2016.
“For the millions of us who are Harry Potter fans, a new Hogwarts story is a huge event,” said Amazon Books editor Seira Wilson.
“I could easily see young fans adapting to the format and using it to act out the play on their own,” Wilson added.
An article by Jill Serjeant for Reuters said that Rowling agreed to publish the script to give in to public demand after appeals are made by fans who couldn’t go to London to see the play.
The play is already sold out and was fully booked until May 2017. This coming November, a movie version of Rowling’s Potter spinoff book “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” will open in theaters worldwide.
Record sales of the seven original Harry Potter books are said to be more than 450 million copies worldwide in 79 languages, while the movie franchise has grossed more than $ 7 billion.
