World leader, boxer, international heartthrob, and now a comic book hero — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau adds another title to his belt as he makes his comic book debut in the latest issue of Marvel’s Civil War II: Choosing Sides, which is set to be released on August 31.
Trudeau is depicted smiling, sitting relaxed in the boxing ring sporting a Maple Leaf-emblazoned tank, black shorts and red boxing gloves. Standing behind him are the members of Canadian superhero squad Alpha Flight: Puck, Sasquatch and Aurora.
“I didn’t want this to just be like a walk-on rescued by superheroes and he thanks them and that’s the end of the story,” writer Chip Zdarsky told CBC.
“I think a lot of these real-life appearances in comics tend to go that way. I liked the idea of him actually engaging them in an ethical debate. It’s a little tricky just because once you start to put words in the prime minister’s mouth, we acknowledge that this is basically Trudeau fan fiction,” he added.

Toronto-based cartoonist Ramon Perez told BBC he chose to depict Mr Trudeau in boxing gear to showcase his unique personality.
“Rather than do a stuffy suit and tie rendition of our [prime minister], I wanted to bring forth more of his personality,” Perez said “He has a very youthful demographic and is present in social media. As well, he has a boxing history, and boxing itself being a part of the short story he appears in, it was the perfect fit.”
Trudeau is not the only politician to have graced the pages of Marvel comics. In 1979, his father Pierre Trudeau appeared in Uncanny X-Men #140, when he sent Alpha Flight to retrieve Wolverine from the X-Men.
US president Barack Obama also received the Marvel treatment when he appeared in a special feature in The Amazing Spider-Man #583 released in 2009; a week before his inauguration.
