A Filipino-American artist has used his paint brush and passion in helping less fortunate Filipinos.
In an article written by Rommel Conclara of ABS-CBN North America News Bureau, which was posted on ABS-CBN News, it was disclosed that Filipino-American artist Kevin Smith, 23, did live demos for the patrons of the Alameda County Fair as part of his 30 for 30 campaign.
Smith’s landscape paintings are inspired by the iconic Bob Ross from the television program “The Joy of Painting.” In his 30 for 30 campaign, Smith priced 30 original pieces at $ 30 each; experiencing the joy of painting as he puts all the proceeds to nonprofit organization Save-A-Tahanan, Inc (STI).
“Basically we’re just helping poor families in the Philippines have a better life,” said Smith.
As stated on its website, STI mobilizes resources to improve the lives of families through training and microfinancing and to empower them as responsible members of the community; promote self-sufficient and stable families, leading communities to develop opportunities and collective solutions to issues of poverty, and upholding respect for all people of economic levels; and believes that a self-sufficient tahanan [home] is the foundation of a strong society.
Smith became motivated to help his fellows after seeing so much poverty during his numerous trips with his family to various parts of the Philippines.
STI, which is celebrating 30 years as an organization of Fil-Am families giving back to the homeland, said they are getting a lot of help from the proceeds from Smith’s artwork.
“Recently we started the scholarship program where we help students with their tuition fees and then what we do which is unique is we coordinate with the schools so we give the tuition payment to the schools directly,” Frederick Esteves of STI said.
Smith said he hopes that more young Fil-Ams can also find ways to give back to the Philippines.
