A Belgian national will be incoming President Rodrigo Duterte’s chef at Malacañang Palace once he assumes office on June 30.
Peter de Cauwer, a Belgian who is fluent in Cebuano dialect and married to a Filipina, was introduced to the press by Duterte as his personal chef.
As mentioned in Edith Regalado’s article for Philstar dated May 17, 2016, De Cauwer is a food consultant, master chef and master baker.
The Belgian chef is expected to whip up common Filipino dishes, which are Duterte’s favorite, such as sautéed mung beans (ginisang munggo), fried fish (piniritong galungong) and dried squid, corned beef in garlic, and fish poached in vinegar broth (paksiw na isda) in the presidential kitchen.
“I have no problem with those food, I could do them,” De Cauwer said; adding he looks forward to serving Duterte in Malacañang.
Trisha Macas of GMA News Online shared in her article the exchange between Duterte and De Cauwer wherein the presumptive president asked the chef if he knew how to cook munggo.
“Kabalo ka magluto ug munggo [Do you know how to cook munggo]?” Duterte asked De Cauwer.
The Belgian replied: “Siyempre. Walang problema [Of course. No problem]… anything.”
De Cauwer said aside from cooking for Duterte, he also wants to protect him.
“I want to protect him kasi maybe someone will put poison in his food,” he said.
