- Aside from uniform, a youth group urged Duterte to stop the K-12 program and halt unabated tuition and other fees increase
Presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte announced on Monday that he plans to implement the “no uniform” policy on public schools. The tough-talking Duterte said having school uniform is just additional burden for the parents and students. The outgoing mayor of Davao City added he is eyeing to eradicate all school fees collected from public school students.
Duterte’s statements caused mixed reaction from citizens.
In a video report from ABS-CBN’s reporter Apples Jalandoni, parents welcomed the pronouncements of incoming president Duterte. They said that Duterte’s plan to implement the “no uniform” policy on public schools will help parents in cutting down expenses.
On the contrary, dressmakers opposed the proposed policy.
In the same video report, dressmakers said Duterte’s proposal will greatly affect their livelihood since it will decrease their regular clients. A teachers’ group also expressed disagreement with Duterte’s plan to implement the policy.
In an online article of Marlina Mallpot posted in Manila Bulletin, the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) insists that school uniforms are needed for security purposes especially in urban areas. They believe that having school uniform is “more economical” for most poor students since it wouldn’t be necessary for them to buy casual clothes.
Meanwhile, militant youth group Kabataan Partylist challenged Duterte to fulfill his statements to scrap other school fees especially in public schools to be able to feel changes in the education sector. They demanded him to immediately stop the implementation of K-12 program in Philippine Education.
According to the youth group’s news release posted on their online portal, K-12 program on education will only result in financial burdens to students and their families; adding that the program is “intrinsically designed” to export labor from the Philippines.
Kabataan Partylist added that the incoming president Duterte should, as well, immediately stop the relentless tuition and other fees hike in different universities and colleges.
