MANILA, Philippines – Hitting back against government officials who don’t believe he can accomplish his plan of wiping out criminality in three to six months after he becomes president, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said they should step down from their posts so he could show them how he plans to pull off his goal.
“Umalis lang muna sila diyan [They should leave their posts] and I will take over and I’ll show them how to do it,” ABS-CBN quoted him as saying.
Duterte’s statement was, apparently, in response to President Benigno Aquino III and Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ricardo Marquez’s respective statements earlier doubting whether he could really accomplish his goal.
“We should not be swayed by what he says he will accomplish in such a short time. Is his style all about shortcuts? What does he mean by shortcuts, that he will just ignore due process?” Aquino asked.
Marquez, on the other hand, said he believes Duterte’s promises are just empty words. Basing on his experience, he said even the most advanced countries in the world cannot totally eliminate crime.
“I have been in service for a long time, baka salita lang ‘yun kasi even the most advanced countries with the best police equipment, they have the CCTV around them but you know drugs continue to happen even in the most advanced countries in the world,” he said.
In insisting he can fulfill his promise, Duterte also blasted Liberal Party (LP) standard bearer Roxas and said the latter cannot wipe out crime even if he’s president for 50 years.
“Kung ako si Roxas, naging presidente, 50 years, walang ma-achieve, [If I’m Roxas and I’m for president for 50 years, I won’t achieve anything],” he said.
