Presidential aspirant and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte shrugs off his son’s endorsement of Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero’s vice presidential candidacy; saying his son, Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte, is old enough to make his own political decisions.
“He is the vice mayor of the city of Davao, although he is my son I cannot control him nor his politics. He is free to choose his own candidate. It is his own politics, he is not under my keep, he is already 47 years old and as a vice mayor, it’s good for him to choose his own, good riddance,” Sun Star quoted the feisty mayor as saying.
On Thursday, March 31, the younger Duterte announced that he is supporting Senator Escudero instead of his father’s running mate Senator Alan Peter Cayetano. Escudero is the running mate of Mayor Duterte’s rival in the presidential race, Senator Grace Poe.
In a statement, Vice Mayor Duterte said he is choosing Senator Chiz Escudero as his vice president because of the significant help the senator has given to Davao City in the form of several infrastructure projects and scholarship programs as well as his contribution to the Lingap Para sa Mahirap and the Davao House of Hope.
“These to me are reasons enough to choose him,” he said.
In her article for ABS-CBN that was published on April 3, 2016, Ms. Doris Bigornia wrote that many Davaoeños believe the vice mayor junked his father’s running mate and supported another candidate just to get back at the elder Duterte for anointing daughter Inday Sara instead of him to succeed as mayor of Davao City.
