- One Cebu endorses Davao City mayor Rodrigo Duterte for President
- The local party vowed to deliver one million votes for him
- Aside from One Cebu, Duterte also secured the endorsement of the Zubiris of Bukidnon and the Christian Democratic Party under LP ally Rufus Rodriguez
After dumping Vice President Jejomar Binay for the presidential slate, the Garcia-led One Cebu has vowed to deliver one million votes for Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
This developed after One Cebu gubernatorial candidate Winston Garcia said in a statement that Cebuanos would do for Duterte what it did for 2004 (aptly referring to the one million winning margin that was given to former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo) when the highest post was clinched by her in 2004 elections.
An article written by Carmel Loise Matus on Philippine Daily Inquirer dated April 3 disclosed that the decision to support the Davao City mayor came during a meeting on April 2.
Garcia noted that during the meeting it “became a logical and clear stand for One Cebu to support one of its kind, and a Bisaya for President.”
As revealed by Garcia, One Cebu thoroughly reviewed Duterte’s platform of government, especially on infrastructure. This, he said, made them believe Duterte is the right candidate to support.
According to statistics, Cebu City and province have a combined voting population of 2.7 million, which is the largest number of electorate throughout the country.
“Kabahan na kayo (My rivals should get scared),” Duterte was quoted as saying in a statement after being informed of One Cebu’s decision to back him.
A few days ago, Sen. Bongbong Marcos won the support of the local party for the vice presidential race.
Meanwhile, Duterte’s camp said that it is getting ready for more mudslinging as more local officials support the tough-talking mayor’s bid for Malacañang.
Aside from the Garcias of Cebu, Duterte also secured the endorsement of the Zubiris of Bukidnon and the Christian Democratic Party under Liberal Party ally Rufus Rodriguez.
