- Vice presidential candidate Alan Peter Cayetano defends runningmate presidentiable Rodrigo Duterte
- Cayetano said he believes that Duterte has a heart and is a fighter for women
- Duterte is now being criticized after joking about an Australian rape victim
Amid the criticisms over a rape joke, presidentiable Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte was defended by his runningmate Senator Alan Peter Cayetano who still believes that his president has a heart and is a fighter for the protection of women.
“As a conservative Christian, we talk differently. But alam kong ang puso ni Mayor [But I know that inside Mayor’s heart], alam ko [I know] he is a fighter, protector of women. Lalo na against violence [If you’d take a look on what he does in Davao, wearing swimsuit in beauty pageants is not allowed. If you could only see how he protects women, especially against violence],” he said.
Duterte is now being criticized online for what the people call an “insensitive comment”.
Sayang [They raped all the women during the first assault… one of them is an Australian lay minister…. When the bodies were taken out, they weren’t wrapped. I looked at her face, she looks like a beautiful American actress. What a waste! What came to mind was, they raped her, they lined up. I was angry because she was raped, that’s one thing. But she was so beautiful, the mayor should have been first. What a waste]!” Duterte said as seen in a video clip that has been circulating online.
Duterte was referring to an incident at the Davao City Jail during his first term as mayor. According to an August 1989 report by the Chicago Tribune, which was cited by CNN in an article, inmates took 15 church workers hostage after grabbing their guards’ weapons. One of the church workers that was hostaged was the aforementioned Australian woman lay minister.
