MERSEYSIDE, England – A brave 25-year-old superhero fan learned she was dying of brain cancer and decided she didn’t want a sad send-off. She asked her family and friends to dress up in costumes like how a comic con event would be.
Erin Roberts, a comic fanatic until the end, succumbed to brain cancer on April 6 after she was diagnosed four months ago.
Roberts’ friends didn’t disappoint her, as more than 200 fellow comic fanatics made their way to St Oswald’s Church in Netherton, Liverpool on April 21 to attend her funeral service.
An article by Liverpool Echo published on April 21 said that Robert’s coffin was taken to the church in a cart pulled by a horse and was followed by her friends and family in different costumes including Stormtroopers, pirates, Superman, Catwoman, Iron Man, Chewbacca and much more.
“She told us everything she wanted before she died and what we have done is set up a trust fund to help pay for it all,” said Roberts’ best friend, Layla Nicholas, in an article for Liverpool Echo.
“We had a donation page and it raised over £3,500 (P184, 000) and that was all family and friends donating to give her the best send-off. She said she always wanted her dad to go as Darth Vader and she wanted Stormtroopers there – and everyone else in bright colors or Marvel outfits,” Nicholas said.
Nicholas added it was Roberts’ dream to be in a cart pulled by a horse, so they decided to raise the money to make that particular dream come true.
“That’s what she always wanted to do, but sadly she couldn’t do it when she was alive,” the best friend said; as she concludes that her friend is now at rest – “… and this funeral is her big send-off.”
Sam Dean mentioned in his article for The Mirror published on April 21 that Roberts was born with skin cancer, but was perfectly healthy until she was diagnosed with brain cancer on the third quarter of last year.
The tumor was removed in October. However, it came back at the start of the year.
Roberts’ friends will be doing a horse-riding event by the end of May in the hope to raise money for the Woodlands hospice, where the Roberts spent three weeks.
